Effingham Post 120 Juniors Take Second At Altamont Tournament

ALTAMONT -- Effingham Post 120 Juniors finished second in the Third Annual Summer Slam Baseball Tournament Friday and Saturday.

EFfingham opened with a 5-2 win over Newton. Newton took a 2-0 first inning lead but Effingham came back to knot the score in the second then tallied the victory with three more runs.

Effingham had seven hits in the contest led by Carter Hayes with a single, double and an RBI and Eli Buhrman with two singles.

In the second game, Effingham and Centralia played to a 6-6 tie. Effingham had 11 hits while Centralia had five. Centralia held a 5-2 lead after four innings and a 6-5 lead after six but Effingham tied in the seventh.

Brennan Poland had two singles, a double and an RBI while Caleb Martin had a single, double and two RBI and Ryan Barnes two doubles.

In the championship game, Altamont edged Effingham 2-0, scoring single runs in the first and third inning. Borders pitched a one-hitter with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Miller had two singles while Armstrong and Goeckner produced both RBI with singles.

Effingham's lone hit came from Swayde Sanders with a single.

Shelby County Finishes Fifth

The Shelby County Junior American Legion Post 289/611/724 team finished fifth in the Altamont Tournament.

Shelby County handed Centralia a 12-6 defeat behind 10 hits. Nick Hutchinson had two doubles and an RBI while Dylan Ohnesorge and Mark Jones had a double each. Jones had an RBI. Tristan Warner had three singles and three RBI.

Moultrie-Douglas County Legion captured a doubleheader over Shelby County Legion 289/611/725.

Moutlrie-Douglas County won 5-3 and 5-2. In the opener, Shelby County outhit Moultrie County 8-7 but Moultrie-Douglas broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh to pull out the victory. Shelby County was led in hitting by Jake Keown with two singles and a double while Andrew Hawkins had two singles.

In the second game, Moultrie-Douglas won 5-2 scoring four runs in the third inning. Shelby County was led by Gunner Thies with a double and two RBI.
