Cards Outslug D'backs

(St. Louis, MO) -- Matt Adams clubbed a three-run homer during an eight-run fourth inning as the Cardinals outslugged the Diamondbacks, 12-8. Daniel Descalso and Matt Holliday both hit two-run homers and pitcher Shelby Miller and Matt Carpenter hit back-to-back solo shots in the fifth for the Cards, who earned a split in the four-game set at Busch Stadium. On the mound, Miller struck out nine over six innings of two-run ball to up his mark to 7-3. Edward Mujica recorded the final two outs to earn his 18th save. Gerardo Parra went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Cliff Pennington added two hits, an RBI and scored twice for Arizona, which finished 4-4 on its rain-shortened eight-game road trip. Ian Kennedy was rocked for 10 runs and 13 hits in four frames as he fell to 3-4.

A's Top White Sox In 10

(Chicago, IL) -- Adam Rosales hit a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Athletics to a 5-4 win over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Yoenis Cespedes added a pair of solo shots while Josh Reddick had one for Oakland. Jerry Blevins improved to 5-and-0 with the win in relief. Grant Balfour picked up his 14th save. Matt Thornton took the loss for the Pale Hose. Alejandro De Aza had three hits and Alexei Ramirez drove in two runs for the Sox. The A's have won six of their last seven games. Chicago has lost nine of its last 10.

Phils Cruise Past Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Delmon Young homered to back a strong outing from Tyler Cloyd, as the Phillies cruised past the Brewers 5-1 in the opener of a four-game series at Miller Park.  Cloyd tossed six-and-two-thirds shutout innings to even his record at 2-2. John Mayberry Jr. went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Phils, who have won a season-high five straight. Jonathan Lucroy plated the lone run for the Brewers, who have dropped four-of-five. Wily Peralta permitted five runs in five frames as he dipped to 4-and-7 with the loss.

Padres Outlast Rockies In 12

(Denver, CO) -- A Yasmani Grandal fielder's choice allowed Chase Headley to score the go-ahead run in the 12th of the Padres' 6-5 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.  Headley, Cameron Maybin and Jed Gyorko had two hits each with Maybin driving in two runs. Luke Gregerson got the win in relief to go to 4-2. Brad Boxberger earned his first save of the season. Wilin Rosario homered for the Rockies and drove in three runs. Rockies stars Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki combined to go 0-for-11. Manny Corpas took the loss, his first of the season.

Puig Powers Dodgers Over Braves

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Yasiel Puig hit a grand slam in the eighth inning that sealed a 5-0 win for the Dodgers over the Braves in Los Angeles. It was Puig's third homer in four games.  Skip Schumaker drove in the other L.A. run. Zack Greinke pitched seven innings to get the win and improve to 3-1. He out-dueled Atlanta starter Tim Hudson, who allowed one run on four hits in seven innings but took the loss to fall to 4-5.

Tigers Take Rubber Match From Rays

(Detroit, MI) -- Victor Martinez homered and drove in three to back seven stellar innings from Max Scherzer as the Tigers beat the Rays, 5-2. Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Detroit, which took two-of-three from Tampa Bay at Comerica Park. Scherzer struck out nine while allowing just four hits and one run to improve to 8-0. Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save. Roberto Hernandez gave up four runs in five and a third frames to fall to 3-6 with the loss.  James Loney drove in both runs for the Rays with a single in the sixth and an infield single in the eighth.

O's Top Astros In Series Finale

(Houston, TX) -- J.J. Hardy singled in the go-ahead score in a three-run fourth inning as the Orioles beat the Astros, 3-1. Adam Jones doubled in the tying run and Chris Dickerson scored on a wild pitch for Baltimore, which took two-of-three at Minute Maid Park.  Hardy finished 4-for-4 in the win. Miguel Gonzalez struck out seven over six innings of one-run ball to up his record to 3-2. Jim Johnson nailed down his 20th save.  Bud Norris allowed all three runs in seven innings of work to take the loss and fall to 5-and-5 for Houston. J.D. Martinez plated the lone run for the Astros with a sac-fly in the first.

Red Sox Double Up Rangers

(Boston, MA) -- David Ortiz hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth at Fenway Park to lift the Red Sox past the Rangers, 6-3. Jacoby Ellsbury and Jonny Gomes each had four hits, while Dustin Pedroia drove in two as Boston took two of three from Texas.  Reliever Andrew Bailey grabbed the win. Jon Lester pitched six inning allowing three runs and seven hits. Jeff Baker had a two-run home run and Adrian Beltre hit a solo shot in the loss. Michael Kirkman fell to 0-and-2 after allowing the Ortiz homer in the final inning.

Royals Roll Twins

(Kansas City, MO) -- Lorenzo Cain closed out a four-run eighth inning with a two-run homer, as the Royals rallied to beat the Twins 7-3 at Kauffman Stadium. Billy Butler added an RBI double in the decisive inning for Kansas City, which won two straight to close this three-game series. Wade Davis allowed three unearned runs in five frames in a no decision. Tim Collins tossed two shutout innings for the win. Jared Burton allowed all the runs in the eighth for the loss. Ryan Doumit hit a two-run homer for Minnesota.

Yankees Clobber Mariners

(Seattle, WASH.) -- Robinson Cano hit a three-run home run as part of a six-run third inning for the Yankees as they defeated the Mariners 6-1 at Safeco Field. Mark Teixeira also homered in the same inning. Eight of the nine players in New York's starting lineup recorded at least one hit. Phil Hughes allowed an unearned run on three hits over seven-plus innings to improve to 3-4. Aaron Harang made it through only 2 1/3 innings and fell to 2-6. Kyle Seager drove in Seattle's only run.

 

Astros Take Appel With Top Pick In MLB Draft

(Secaucus, NJ) -- The Houston Astros have selected Stanford pitcher Mark Appel with the first pick in the 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft. Commissioner Bud Selig makes the announcement.

It's the second straight year the Astros have had the top pick. Appel was drafted eighth overall last year by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but did not sign and returned to the Cardinal for his senior season. He went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA, four complete games and 130 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings this season. Opponents batted just .203 off him during his senior year.
