Recent St. Anthony High School graduate Ben Hecht has announced plans to attend Illinois State University to play baseball.
Hecht, the son of Jerry and Donna Hecht, said his chief reason for choosing the Redbirds was the opportunity to be a two-way player. He said the Redbirds encourage two-way play and said they've had the success to back up that strategy.
Hecht has been recruited for his success as a pitcher, but loves to play every day so hopes to get that opportunity with Illinois State.
Hecht was a member of the 1A State Champion Bulldog baseball team in 2012 and was named the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year that season, only the second time a junior has received the honor. The other junior to be so honored was Teutopolis High School graduate Derek Thompson, who just completed his second year with John A. Logan Community College.
Hecht said he hopes to pursue studies in Business at Illinois State, although what direction that will take remains to be seen.
