Teutopolis Advances To Class 2A State Baseball Tournament

SAUGET -- Teutopolis High School has reached the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament for the third time in four years.

The Wooden Shoes defeated Carlyle 5-2 despite over an hour rain-delay to start the game Monday at the Sauget Super-Sectional.

T-town stepped out to a 1-0 first inning lead. With one out, Chase Wendling and Bobby Wenthe hit back-to-back singles. Kyle Pruemer loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Alex Goldstein hit a sacrifice, scoring Wendling. But Carlyle got tough and ended the inning allowing only one run.

The score was tied at 2-2 after the second inning. T-town tallied another run, this one after Derek Smith drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by Ried Hardiek and came home on a single by Jared Waldhoff.

Carlyle scored on a walk and two singles. Then things were quiet over the next two innings.

The Shoes came back strong in the fifth, scoring three runs. Waldhoff led off with a triple and scored on a single by Chase Wendling. Kyle Pruemer delivered the big blow when he knocked out a two-run homer. And that's where the scoring ended, 5-2 in favor of the Shoes.

Waldhoff pitched a two-hitter with two walks, and six strikeouts and improved his record to a perfect 8-0. He also was one of the hitting leaders with a single, triple and an RBI. Wendling finished with two singles and an RBI while Bobby Wenthe had a single and double. Pruemer had a home run and two RBI and Goldstein knocked in the other RBI.

T-town improves its mark to 29-3 on the season and will now square off against Lisle, a 5-4 winner over Beecher Monday. The other two teams in the state tournament field are Pleasant Plains, a 10-2 winner over St. Joseph-Ogden, and Eureka, a 6-1 champion over Oregon.

T-town takes on Lisle at 3 p.m. at Peoria's O'Brien Field Friday while Pleasant Plains and Eureka meet at 5 p.m. The winners advance to the state championship game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. while the losers square off for third place.

Class 1A Marion Super-Sectional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg came up a little short in the Class 1A Marion Super-Sectional, falling to Shawnee, 4-2 in its inaugural season as a co-op.

The Redskins tallied all four of its runs in the third inning and held that lead until the top of the seventh. Windsor/Stew-Stras came roaring back with two runs but fell short. The Blue Devils outhit Shawnee 7-5 but left seven runners stranded including five in scoring position.

Alex Allen was a leader for the Blue Devils with two singles, a triple and an RBI. Gunner Theis added a double. Aaron White suffered the tough-luck loss, going five innings, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out two.

Brandon Pind hit a two-run homer for the winners while Gavyn Ellet had a single, triple and an RBI.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg finished the season with a 25-6 record.
