Cubs Blank White Sox In Crosstown Rivalry Opener
(Chicago, IL) -- The Cubs held their crosstown rivals to two hits in a 7-0 win over the White Sox on the southside of Chicago at U.S. Celluar Field. Jeff Samardzija went the distance, surrendering two walks while striking out eight to improve to 3-6. Julio Borbon hit a two-run homer while Anthony Rizzo smacked a double and triple while driving in two for the Cubbies. Alfonso Soriano was 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Northsiders won their second straight since a six-game slide. Jose Quintana gave up four runs over six frames for the ChiSox and fell to 3-2. The White Sox saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.
Cards Double Up Royals
(Kansas City, MO) -- Yadier Molina clubbed a two-run homer and knocked in four as the Cardinals doubled up the Royals 6-3 in the opener of a two-game series at rainy Kauffman Stadium. The start of the game was delayed one hour due to rain. Allen Craig went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Matt Carpenter plated a run and scored a run for the Cards, who have won five of their last six. Adam Wainwright scattered three runs and 12 hits over eight innings as he upped his mark to 7-3. Edward Mujica closed it out for his 15th save. Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer drove in a run each for the Royals, who have lost six straight and 10 of their last 11. James Shields yielded six runs in six frames as he fell to 2-6.
Reds' Baker Says Players Should Fight To Resolve Conflict
Reds manager Dusty Baker seems to think physical fights could resolve conflicts between baseball players. Matt Garza bad mouthed Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto for throwing a pitch over the head of David DeJesus on Sunday, leading to a verbal spat. Baker told reporters Garza should confront Cueto if he has an issue with him.
