Contreras has been with the Chicago Cubs for seven seasons. His five-year deal from the Cardinals is worth a reported $87.5 million.

The American League’s Most Valuable Player got the offer directly from managing director Hal Steinbrenner, according to the MLB site. The Yankees matched a deal offered by the San Francisco Giants.
