Friars Double Up Cards

(San Diego, CA) -- Chris Denorfia was 3-for-4 with a game-tying RBI single in the sixth to help the Padres beat the Cardinals, 4-2. Jesus Guzman followed Denorfia in the sixth by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the go-ahead run. Will Venable added a solo homer and Chase Headley drove in a run for San Diego, which has won three straight. Jason Marquis allowed one earned run over six innings to improve to 6-and-2 while Huston Street notched his 11th save. Jon Jay was 2-for-4 in defeat for St. Louis. Shelby Miller allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings to fall to 5-3. The Cards have lost three of their last five.

 

White Sox Hold Off Red Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Adam Dunn clubbed a three-run homer in the first inning as the White Sox hung on to beat the Red Sox 6-4 in the opener of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Alejandro De Aza and Alexei Ramirez both plated a run and scored a run for the Pale Hose, who have won five of their last seven. Dylan Axelrod tossed six innings of two-run ball to improve his record to 2-3. Addison Reed closed it out for his 15th save. Jarrod Saltalamacchia belted a two-run homer and Will Middlebrooks hit a two-run double for the BoSox, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.  Jon Lester allowed six runs, five earned, in six frames as he fell to 6-1 with the loss.
