T-town Nabs Edwardsville Tiger Classic, Area Baseball Roundup

EDWARDSVILLE -- Teutopolis High School claimed the Edwardsville Tiger Classic during the weekend with three baseball victories.

The Wooden Shoes opened with an upset win Friday over the host squad, Edwardsville, 4-2. The Tigers had suffered only one loss heading into the contest and is ranked at No. 1 in Class 4A.

Sam Bushur proved to be the catalyst for the Shoes. He led both offensively and defensively as he took the win on the mound going all seven innings, allowing two runs on four htis, five walks and striking out five.

He also led at bat with three of the six T-town hits. Bushur had two doubles, a home run and drove in two runs. Cade Buehnerkemper added two singles and an RBI.

T-town opened with a 1-0 first inning lead and Edwardsville tied in the third. The Shoes then moved ahead 3-1 in the fifth. The Tigers pulled within 3-2 in the sixth but the Shoes scored an insurance run in the seventh.

Edwardsville dropped to 23-2.

In Saturday action, T-town edged Chatham Glenwood, 1-0 despite only having one hit in the contest.

And, that hit came from Bushur who drove in the lone run in the fifth inning.

Glenwood had three hits led by McMasters with two singles.

Kayden Althoff picked up the pitching win, going all seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits, two walks while striking out five.

T-town then finished out the exciting three games with a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win over Highland.

The Shoes took a 2-1 opening inning lead. Highland tied in the top of the fifth. T-town moved ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth and Highland tied in the top of the seventh. 

T-town then won it in the bottom of the seventh.

Buehnerkemper had two singles and two RBI while Bushur had a double. Mitch Althoff and Dylan Pruemer had an RBI each.

Derek Konkel went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Pruemer came on to finish, getting the final two outs, allowing one hit for the win.

The Shoes are now 16-8 on the season and Bushur moved his pitching record to 5-2.

At St. Anthony

Newton came calling and tallied the winning run in the top of the eighth for a 3-2 victory over Effingham St. Anthony Saturday.

The Bulldogs had a 2-0 opening inning lead and held that until the top of the seventh. The Eagles tallied two runs to knot the score and then took the victory in the eighth.

Both teams had four hits. Gage Reynolds led the way with a double and two RBI while Isaac Flowers had a triple.

St. Anthony was led by Will Hoene with a single and two RBI.

Brandon Einhorn picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles, going 1.2 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, one walk and striking out one.

At Altamont

Altamont had a rough weekend, falling to Hillsboro and Fairfield in Saturday action.

In the opener, the Hiltoppers took a 15-3 victory in five innings.

Hillsboro stepped out to a 2-0 first inning lead then tacked on five in the second and finished out with eight in the third. Altamont scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth.

The Indians had only five hits compared to 14 for Hillsboro. Nathan Shepard had a single and double and scored both runs. Mason Robinson had a double and drove in two runs while Tyler Robbins had a double. Kienon Eirhart had a single and an RBI.

Fairfield eventually pulled out a 12-10 victory over Altamont in the second contest.

The Indians held a 2-0 first inning lead. Fairfield moved ahead 3-2 in the top of the second but Altamont tallied five in the bottom of the frame to lead 7-3. Fairfield scored two in the third and moved ahead 9-8 in the top of the fourth. The back-and-forth contest went back to Altamont in the fifth, 10-9. But the Mules came back with three in the sixth for the win.

Fairfield had 12 hits and Altamont finished with three errors.

Jared Hammer led Altamont with two singles, a home run and four RBI while Robinson had two singles and an RBI and Shepard two singles. Robbins and Dillon Elam had an RBI each. Eirhart and Wyatt Phililps had a single and an RBI each.

Father McGivney played host to South Central and sent the Cougars home with a 10-5 loss Friday.

South Central moved ahead 1-0 in the top of the second but Father McGivney came roaring back with six runs in the bottom of the frame.

South Central talied a run in the top of the third and  Father McGivney scored one in the bottom of the fifth to lead 7-2. South Central pulled within 7-5 in the top of the sixth but, once again, Father McGivney tallied three in the bottom of the sixth.

The Cougars had five hits led by Spencer Johannes with two singles.

At Louisville

Shelbyville handed North Clay (Louisville) a rare loss Saturday, 10-8.

North Clay dropped to 23-5 on the season and will be back in action Tuesday hosting Vandalia during Senior Day festivities.
