Cardinals 4, Reds 2

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals closed their homestand Wednesday with the concentrated burst of offense that the club had been seeking for much of the past week. It was a glimpse, players said after the team's 4-2 win over Cincinnati, that should be the norm from a mostly established group of hitters.

With three runs off Reds starter Homer Bailey in a five-batter span in the sixth inning, the Cardinals matched their run production from the past three games combined. An announced crowd of 39,821 was on hand at Busch Stadium to see the Cardinals take their second series of the year from Cincinnati.

 

Cubs 6, Padres 2

CHICAGO -- In 105 starts, Scott Feldman had never finished what he started, but he did so Wednesday night.

Feldman fanned a career-high 12 batters, gave up three hits and helped himself with an RBI double in his first complete game to lift the Cubs to a 6-2 victory over the Padres.

The right-hander had to plead his case with manager Dale Sveum to pitch the ninth after throwing 100 pitches over eight innings.

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts is threatening to the pull the team out of Wrigley Field if $300-million in upgrades for the stadium aren't approved. Ricketts told the City Club of Chicago Wednesday the team is committed to staying at Wrigley, but needs a 6,000 square-foot scoreboard in left field, a large sign in right field and advertising on a hotel to be built by the stadium. There's no word on when the City Council could vote on the measure.

 

White Sox 5, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON -- Following a 34-pitch, two-run second inning by Chris Sale on Wednesday night at Rangers Ballpark, the White Sox left-handed ace certainly didn't look like a No. 1 pitcher moving in the direction of a quality start.

Luckily for the White Sox, Sale settled down and worked efficiently and exceptionally through seven innings during the team's 5-2 victory before 34,677. The White Sox used the power of the long ball to take control in the top of the seventh as Sale (3-2) held the Rangers steady, helping the club snap a three-game losing streak.
