Cardinals Crush Reds In Rubber Match

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Cardinals hit four home runs and got a complete-game shutout from Jake Westbrook to beat the Reds 10-0 at Busch Stadium. Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran, Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter all reached the seats for the Redbirds, who took two-of-three from Cincinnati.  Westbrook threw a five-hitter.

The Cardinals enjoy an off-day today. They open a three-game series Saturday night against the division-rival Brewers at Busch Stadium. Shelby Miller is slated to oppose former Cardinal Kyle Lohse, who signed with Milwaukee just last month. The Brewers are off to a 2-6 start.

Brewers, Cubs Rained Out

(Chicago, IL) -- Last night's scheduled game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs was postponed due to rain. The game was rescheduled for Tuesday, July 30 at 1:20 p.m. as a part of a day-night doubleheader. It was to be the finale of a three-game series in the Windy City.  The teams split the first two games.

-- The Cubs welcome the defending champion San Francisco Giants to Wrigley Field this afternoon. Chicago's series finale against the Brewers was rained out yesterday.  The Cubbies sit at 3-5 on the season. The Giants come in having swept the Rockies to move to 6-3. First pitch today is set for 1:20.

-- Cubs prospect Jorge Soler could be looking at a lengthy suspension. The outfielder reportedly charged an opponent's dugout with a bat while playing for the Single-A Daytona Cubs Wednesday night. The incident occurred in the seventh inning of Daytona's game against the Clearwater Threshers. He was pulled away by others and ejected from the contest.

-- Chicago Police are investigating a suspicious package that was sent to Wrigley Field on Wednesday. The package was addressed to Cubs owner Tom Ricketts and contained a goat's head. Police say they are investigating it as an "intimidating package." The "Chicago Tribune" reports the package was found at Gate K near the field.

White Sox Can't Handle Nats

(Washington, DC) -- Bryce Harper hit a solo homer as the Nationals defeated the White Sox last night in Washington DC, 5-2. Adam Dunn and Alex Rios each had an RBI groundout for Chicago, which fell to 4-4. Gavin Floyd took the loss, allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings. The series wraps up tonight as Dylan Axelrod pitches opposite Dan Haren.

 

Fenway Park Sellout Streak Ends

(Boston, MA) -- The longest home sellout streak in Major League Baseball history is over. The Red Sox drew 30,862 fans for last night's game against the Orioles at Fenway Park.  It ended a stretch of 794 consecutive regular-season sellouts. The streak was 820 games long if you count the postseason, and dated back to May 14, 2003. The Red Sox lost to the O's, 8-5.

Rangers To Keep Nolan Ryan In Organization

(Arlington, TX) -- The Rangers have announced that CEO Nolan Ryan is staying with the team. It ends rumors about whether or not Ryan will leave the franchise after losing his title of team president last month. The Rangers previously promoted GM Jon Daniels to president of baseball operations and Rick George to president of business operations.
