St. Anthony Splits Wins at Tuscola Invite; EHS Claims One Against Charleston

TUSCOLA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School competed in the Tuscola Baseball Invitational Saturday and split wins.

The Bulldogs lost to host Tuscola 6-4. St. Anthony held a 2-0 lead until the third when Tuscola scored all six of its runs. The Bulldogs came back with two in the sixth but fell short.

Neil Williams had a single and double for St. Anthony while Jacob Schuette had two singles and Ben Hecht a double. Eric Gertner had a single and drove in two runs.

In the second game, St. Anthony claimed a 9-3 victory over Danville Schlarman. The Bulldogs had 11 hits in the contest.

Hecht had two doubles while Austin Bushur had a single, home run and two RBI and Williams two singles, a double and an RBI. Gertner pitched the victory going four innings, allowing six hits, three runs, two walks and striking out five.

St. Anthony is now 9-2 on the season and plays at Newton today.

At Charleston

Effingham and Charleston split an Apollo Conference doubleheader Saturday.

The Hearts won the opener 10-7 behind a whopping 18 hits. Three players had four hits each. Braydon Bone had three singles and a double while Drew Levitt had a single, three doubles and two RBI and Mahaffey had three singles, a double and an RBI. Carter Hayes chipped in with a single, home run and five RBI, Vail with two singles and an RBI and Adam Koester with two singles.

In the second game, Charleston was a 4-2 winner. EHS led 2-0 until the fifth when the Trojans tallied all four runs.

The Hearts had only three hits in the contest while Charleston had seven. The Hearts drop to 1-1 in the conference, 2-5 overall.

Effingham captured two junior varsity games, beating Charleston 9-5 and 10-8.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Central A&M split a doubleheader.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg won the opener 4-0, scoring single runs in the third and fourth and two in the fifth.

Christian Vonderheide pitched the victory allowing six hits, two walks and striking out nine. Hayden Cole had a home run and drove in three runs.

In the second contest, Central A&M won 4-3. Windsor/Stew-Stras held a 2-1 lead until the fifth when Central A&M tallied three runs.

Theis had three hits for Windsor/Stew-Stras and an RBI.
