Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander has a mild back muscle strain and likely won't be ready to pitch on opening day on March 26, saying yesterday it would "probably take a miracle" for him to do so. There's no timetable for his return. Verlander had a similar injury during spring training in 2015 and did not make his season debut until June 13.

Rangers' Calhoun Had Surgery On Jaw

Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun had surgery on his broken jaw Monday, one day after it was fractured when he was hit in the face by a fastball during a spring training game. Doctors were going to wire his jaw shut, but instead put in a plate to steady the fracture, which should lead to a quicker recovery.  Calhoun has previously worn a face shield on his batting helmet, but stopped during last season.
