Carlos Martinez got the final six outs as the St. Louis Cardinals held on for a 7-6 win over the Washington Nationals Wednesday.
The Cardinals had a 7-0 lead before the Nationals came storming back.
Cardinals Manager Mike Shildt said he will operate with a "fluid" bullpen after previous closer Bud Norris was rocked in two consecutive outings earlier this week.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs salvaged the final game of a three-game set defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 Wednesday. Daniel Murphy and Kyle Schwarber homered to back solid pitching from Jose Quintana.
The win pushes the Cubs' lead over Milwaukee back to four games, while the Cardinals' victory kept them 4-1/2 games back.
The Cubs now head to Washington while the Cardinals play in Detroit. Both games tonight start just after 6pm.
