ST. LOUIS -- Jack Flaherty has locked his pitching position in for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The rookie went seven innigns, allowing four hits, one run, didn't give up a walk and struck out five as the Cardinals downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 Tuesday at Busch Stadium. He retired the first 12 batters he faced.

The win gives the Cardinals a 26-12 record under Manager Mike Shildt, who now officially has the job after the Cardinals took the interim tag off Tuesday.

Two home runs helped Flaherty as Carlos Martinez nailed a first-inning shot. Then in the fourth, Tyler O'Neill tagged a 436-foot homer and the Cardinals were ahead 4-1.

Martinez added a single and finished with two RBI while O'Neill also had two RBI. Jed Gyorko and Yadier Molina added doubles each. Matt Carpenter produced with two singles in the 10-hit attack.
