Cubs Finally Break Loose For Win, Cardinals Beat Dodgers

DETROIT -- Finally . . . the Chicago Cubs have more than one home run in a game. It was actually three plus eight other hits in beating Detroit, 8-2 Wednesday at Comerica Park.

David Bote knocked out a two-run shot in the fifth, Javier Baez a three-run blow in the ninth and Anthony Rizzo added a solo homer, also in the ninth. It was the 26th for Baez and the 20th for Rizzo.

Daniel Murphy, acquired by the Cubs on Tuesday from the Nationals, came on with an RBI single. He batted leadoff and finished with two singles.

Jon Lester went 5 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits. He allowed one walk and struck out three, improving to 14-5 on the season.

Albert Almora had a single and double and Ben Zobrist added a double.


Cardinals 3, Dodgers 1

St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers and did it with the long ball Wednesday.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead in the sixth. St. Louis finally tied in the eighth.

Jack Flaherty, a rookie, was keeping the Dodgers off-balance. He went through five no-hit innings before he allowed a hit in the sixth, a solo shot by Joc Pederson. He finished with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Another rookie, Tyler O'Neill, tied the game in the eighth with his solo shot. Then it was time for Paul DeJong's two-run blow in the ninth as the Cardinals tallied three runs.

It was rookie day as the Cardinals were held in check by Walker Buehler over seven innings. He allowed only three hits. But the Cardinals' Dakota Hudson held a 1-1 tie retiring Manny Machado with the bases loaded in the eighth. Then rookie Jordan HIcks struck out the Dodgers in the ninth.

The Cardinals have put together eight consectuvie wins. They are now on top of the National League Wild Card standings.


Yankees Place Chapman On DL

The New York Yankees have placed closer Aroldis Chapman on the 10-day disabled list due to left knee tendinitis. Chapman left Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins after throwing just six pitches.


Indians' Martin Done For Season

Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin is done for the season due to a bacterial infection. Martin became ill earlier this month and doctors determined he had a life-threatening bacterial infection that damaged his internal organs.


MLB Unveils 2019 Schedule

Major League Baseball has unveiled its 2019 schedule that has all 30 teams opening March 28. It’s the earliest Opening Day in history, not counting international openers. The first games of the season will be played in Japan between the Mariners and Athletics March 20-21.
