Cardinals Continue With Wins, Cubs Blanked

MIAMI -- The St. Louis Cardinals continue to put wins together, this one a 7-1 victory over Miami at Marlins Park Wednesday.

It was seven extra base hits out of the nine total that the Cardinals strung together.  Yadier Molina got the Cardinals off in the right direction with a solo shot in the first. He finished with a double as well. He now has 141 home runs moving into 14th in franchise history.

Matt Carpenter knocked out a solo homer in the sixth. Yairo Munoz,  Marcell Ozuna, Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong had a double each. Wong added a single while Jose Martinez finished with a single.

John Gant picked up the pitching win to improve to 4-4. He went six innings, allowed two hits, one run, one walk and struck out four.

Royals 9, Cubs 0

Anthony Rizzo nailed a single off the leg of Royals pitcher Heath Fillmyer in the first inning and Jose Quintana was laying out some tough pitching on the mound, with only six pitches in the first.

But then things took a turn. Kansas City took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Drew Butera nailed a two-run double and a three-run homer by Adalberto Mondesi in the seventh sealed the Cubs' fate as the Royals went on for a 9-0 victory, scoring four more in the eighth.

David Bote and Tommy LaStella had the only other hits for the Cubs with a single each. Quintana ended up going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs, two walks and had four strikeouts. Tyler Chatwood came on to go 1.2 innings, allowing four more runs, three hits, two walks and one strikeout.

It was Rizzo's 29th birthday and his single was the 999th of his career.

The Cubs now have an off day before heading home to play host to Washington.

Nationals' Herrera On DL

The Washington Nationals have placed right-hander Kelvin Herrera on the 10-day disabled list with a right rotator cuff impingement. However, the Nationals say the problem is inflammation and they hope Herrea can start throwing again by the end of next week.

Fear Factor at White Sox, Yankees Game

There was a ‘Fear Factor’ moment during Wednesday night’s game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Play had to be stopped in the ninth inning while the Yankees’ trainer fished a live moth out of second base umpire Bruce Dreckman’s ear.
