MIAMI -- The game was tied at 2-2 going into the eighth inning when St. Louis' Matt Carpenter stepped to the plate.

Carpenter, who has been sizzling on the hitting side of the field lately, knocked out an eighth inning homer off Elieser Hernandez to give the Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins.

Carpenter now has an NL-leading 30 home runs this year. His wasn't the only home run of the contest as Paul DeJong nailed a game-tying shot in the seventh. He also added a double.

Miles Mikolas went seven innings, allowing five hits, no walks and striking out one. He also had a single. He threw before lots of family members as his wife, Lauren, recently gave birth to twins.

Marcell Ozuna added two singles to the hitting parade.

Dakota Hudson came in to throw a scoreless eighth and Bud Norris finished out in the ninth for the save, his 22nd.

Cubs 5, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY -- David Bote is proving his worth. An 18th-round draft pick in 2012 by the Cubs, he came in to make the most of his opportunity with the club by hitting a two-run triple and an RBI single.

Bote got the Cubs started off right in the first inning with his triple. The Cubs came back with two more in the fifth and tacked on a final run in the eighth. He is subbing for Kris Bryant who is out with a sore left shoulder.

Mike Montgomery improved to 3-0 on the mound and threw six plus scoreless innings. He gave up five hits and was lifted in the seventh.

Ben Zobrist was taken out of the contest after five innings because his left hip tightened up, but will most likely return to action today. Zobrist doubled in the first and is among the top five hitters in the NL with a .313 batting average.
