PITTSBURGH -- The Chicago Cubs stepped out to a 4-1 opening inning lead on Pittsburgh Wednesday and that gave Cole Hamels the cushion he needed in picking up the win on the mound. Hamels went five innings, allowing three hits, two walks and striking out nine as the Cubs won 9-2 at PNC Park.

Hamels even added a hit on the night as the Cubs banged out 15. It was his first since July 17, 2016. The Cubs picked up Hamels from the Rangers Friday.

Willson Contreras had a good evening at the plate with a single, double and a two-run homer in the eighth. Javier Baez had a single, double and an RBI as he made it on base five times. Baez now has a league-leading 83 RBI.

Jason Heyward had a good day with two singles, a double and an RBI while Kyle Schwarber added two singles and an RBI. Ben Zobrist contributed a double.

Cardinals 6, Rockies 3

The St. Louis Cardinals went through six pitchers Wednesday and that led to a 6-3 victory over the visiting Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium.

Picking up the win on the mound was Austin Gomber as he went one innings allowing one walk and striking out two. Gomber, Daniel Poncedeleon and Dakota Hudson went 4 1/3 innings and didn't allow a hit.

Nationals Designate Kelley

The Washington Nationals have designated pitcher Shawn Kelley in a surprise move. It’s reported that the decision was made after Kelley threw a tantrum when he gave up a homer in their big 25-4 win over the Mets this week.

Gray Has Offensive Tweets

Today’s major league baseball player to have offensive tweets from the past resurface is New York Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray. Gray’s Twitter account has since been deleted, but the tweets he sent back in 2012 were said to be of a racist nature.
