CHICAGO -- Jon Lester went six innings, allowing four hits, one run, no walks and striking out seven. Although he didn't get the decision, he did his part as the Chicago Cubs edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-1 in action Wednesday at Wrigley Field.

Albert Almora Jr. gave the Cubs their first lead in the fourth. He doubled and came home on Ben Zobrist's single. The lead stood until the seventh when the Diamondbacks' A.J. Pollock hit a game-tying home run to left. That pushed Lester into the dugout and Carl Edwards Jr. came on in relief to get out of the inning with two strikeouts.

The game-winner came in the eighth when Javier Baez came on to pinch hit and got an infield single. He advanced to second on a throwing error. Another throwing error allowed Tyler Chatwood, who was running for Baez, to score the winning run.

The Cubs finished with five hits as Almora had two doubles, Zobrist a single and RBI, Willson Contretras a single and Baez a single.

After Lester's exit, Edwards Jr. entered and tossed two perfect frames and finished with the 200th strikeout of his career. Pedro Strop came on to finish out the ninth.

Reds 7, Cardinals 3

Both teams banged out 10 hits in this one but the Cincinnati Reds produced seven runs while St. Louis could come up with only three in the 7-3 loss. That defeat gave St. Louis a 3-5 road trip.

The Reds struck early with two runs in the first as the Cardinals continue to struggle on the mound. The bullpen ended up giving up four runs.

Starte Jack Flaherty gave up three runs in five innings for a 3-1 Reds lead. St. Louis pulled within 3-2 in the top of the sixth but the Reds came back with two in the bottom of the frame. St. Louis scored a final run in the seventh but once again the Reds retaliated with two in the bottom of the inning.

The Cardinals left 11 on base and in the series, scored just six runs in the three games. Yadier Molina led the way with two singles, a home run and an RBI while Paul DeJong added a home run. Five Cardinals had a single each.

Red Sox Acquire Eovaldi

The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Nathan Eovaldi from Tampa Bay for a minor league pitcher. Meanwhile, the Rays also sent starting pitcher Matt Andriese to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor leaguers.

Mets' Cespedes Will Undergo Surgeries

The New York Mets say Yoenis Cespedes will undergo a pair of surgeries to remove calcifications around his Achilles tendons as well as bone spurs on each heel. The condition dates back to his teenage years and the surgeries mean Cespedes won’t be back in the Mets lineup until well into next season.
