ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals fired manager Mike Matheny Saturday night with the team at one game over .500. The Cardinals were on a six-game home losing streak. The clubhouse was in shock Sunday but came through with a victory.
Hitting coach John Mabry and assistant hitting coach Bill Mueller are also out, as bench coach Mike Shildt was named interim manager.
The Cardinals celebrated a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds in Shildt's debut in the series finale at Busch Stadium.
Matt Carpenter hit a leadoff home run and Dexter Fowler followed with a solo shot of his own to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
All-Star pitcher Miles Mikolas gave up three runs early but Shildt stuck with him. Then he brought Jon Gant in and he went four innings in relief.
The Cardinals' had a four-run rally in the fourth. Tommy Pham came in when Harrison Bader suffered a hyperextended knee and had a two-run single with the bases loaded
