LOS ANGELES -- Kyle Hendricks is struggling. The Los Angeles Dodgers jumped on Hendricks in the first two innings and went on for a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs Wednesday.
The Dodgers' Max Muncy hit a solo shot as the Dodgers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Joc Pederson then came to the plate in the second and nailed a two-run shot as the Dodgers took a 6-0 lead. Cody Bellinger added on another homer in the eighth.
Hendricks lasted only 2 2/3 innings and dropped to 1-4 on the year. The start was the second shortest of his career.
The Cubs are suffering a long, hard road trip, going 1-6 with one more on the road before heading back to Wrigley Field.
Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer in the first and a two-run double in the eighth. Javier Baez continued his hot streak with a double in the first inning. He scored on Contreras' home run. The Cubs brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings but the Dodgers bullpen came through.
Indians 5, Cardinals 1
ST. LOUIS -- Inconsistency has been the hallmark of the St. Louis Cardinals this season.
St. Louis went through a terrible game then came back to put together a four-game winning streak last Thursday. But the Cardinals slumped back into the nightmare with a 5-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians Wednesday.
Tommy Pham has been on the worst end of it, going 24 at-bats without a hit. He went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's loss.
Edwin Encarnacion and Lonnie Chisenhall hit back-to-back home runs for the Braves in the second.
Jayson Werth Done With Baseball
Outfielder Jayson Werth has announced he’s he's done playing professional baseball, although he didn’t use the word ‘retire.’ The former Washington Nationals star signed with the Seattle Mariners as a free agent last November, but had been playing with Triple-A Tacoma.
