PITTSBURGH -- Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell had some firepower as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-0 on Memorial Day.
Rizzo drove in three runs and Russell chipped in with a two-run pinch-hit home run at PNC Park.
Mike Montgomery made his first start of the season, allowing two hits over 5 2/3 innings while retiring the first 13 batters he faced. Corey Dickerson hit a single in the fifth to end that string. This was the longest outing of the season as Montgomery had gone only three innings before starting.
Rizzo led off the second with a home run and drove in a pair of runs in the ninth on a single. He was involved in a wild play in the eighth. The Cubs loaded the bases when Chris Gimenez hit a grounder to shortsotp Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez threw home for the force out but Rizzo slid in with Diaz going down. Diaz was attempting to throw to first for the double play but the ball went past the first baseman and down the right field line for an error. The Pirates challenged the call saying Rizzo violated the slide rule. But the umpires reviewed and said the play stood,
Brewers 8, Cardinals 3
The Milwaukee Brewers struck in the fourth inning when Brent Suter hit a ball past the outstretched Jose Martinez and by the time the ball was found in foul territory, two runs had scored.
The Brewers added four more runs and handed the Cardinals an 8-3 loss.
The Cardinals scored three runs off Brent Suter but three Milwaukee relievers held them scoreless over the final four innings. The Cardinals scored two of their three runs via Yairo Munoz homer in the fifth.
The loss dropped the Cardinals to third place behind the Cubs.
Braves Place Acuna on DL
The Atlanta Braves have placed rookie phenom Ronald Acuna on the 10-day DL with a knee injury.
An MRI exam revealed a mild sprain of his left ACL, along with bruises to his knee and back.
