The Effingham Hearts, down 3-0, came back to defeat the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes 4-3 in high school baseball Monday afternoon.
The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
Teutopolis jumped out to the early lead, scoring a run in the first inning. Lee Hardiek delivered a one-out single, and Cody Jansen followed with a base hit. With two outs, Drew Thoele delivered the first of his three hits in the game to drive home Hardiek and make it 1-0.
The Shoes added two runs in the third inning. Jansen was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, followed by a walk to Eric Kremer and a RBI triple by Thoele. Jansen had been erased on the bases, but Thoele's triple brought Kremer home to make it 2-0 and then Ethyn Dust's single scored Thoele to make it 3-0.
That was the end of the scoring for the Shoes, though. Meanwhile, Effingham's offense got on track with the help of some T-Town defensive lapses. Zach Lee walked to start the Effingham fourth and Brayton Poland singled. After one out, Cooper Jackson reached on a fielder's choice. Then came a key at-bat. Nick Bishop hit a ball that Teutopolis threw home for a force at the plate, but the relay throw ended up down the right field line, scoring both Poland and Jackson to make it 3-2.
Effingham tied the game in the fifth. With two outs, Ryan Sandifer drew a walk and Zach Lee doubled Sandifer home to make it 3-3.
The Hearts scored the winning run in the seventh inning when Kendall Ballman led off the inning with a double. A ground ball moved Ballman to third and ball to the backstop allowed Ballman to score what turned out to be the winning run.
Bryce Lohman went the full seven innings for Effingham, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while recording two strikeouts and hitting two batters.
Eric Kremer went 5-1/3 innings for Teutopolis, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks and two wild pitches, but striking out nine. Collin Funneman took the loss in relief, allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out one and making one wild pitch. Lee Hardiek came in to get the final two outs, recording one strikeout.
