Hearts, Bulldogs Nab Weekend Baseball Wins

Effingham High School claimed three victories during weekend baseball action.

The Hearts won a Friday contest over Okaw Valley, 16-3 in five innings. EHS had 14 hits in the contest led by Brayton Poland with a single, double, home run and six RBI, Brett Koester with three singles and an RBI, Zack Lee with a single, double and two RBI, Parker Seachrist with two singles and an RBI and Kendall Ballman with a double and an RBI.

Lohman went five innings to pick up the pitching win on a five-hitter with four walks and three strikeouts.

In a Saturday doubleheader at Lincoln, the Hearts claimed Apollo Conference victories.

In the opener, EHS was a 5-0 winner. The Hearts held a 1-0 lead until the fifth then tallied four runs.

Ballman and Poland had a double each while Mason Hull and Nick Bishop had two singles each. Bishop added two RBI.

Zack Lee went 6.2 innings allowing three hits, three walks and striking out seven for the pitching win.

In the second game, the Hearts won 10-1. EHS banged out 10 hits led by Seachrist with a single, double and an RBI and Hull with a double and two RBI.

Sandifer was the winning pitcher going 3.1 innings, allowng one run, two walks and striking out four.

The Hearts now stand at 11-1 on the season.

At Marshall

Effingham St. Anthony captured a non-conference victory over Marshall, 2-0 Saturday.

The Bulldogs tallied a run in the second on a Ben Strullmyer double. The second run came in the fifth.

Gavin Braunecker shut down the Lions, throwing a complete game. He allowed four hits, one walk and struck out a whopping 17 batters.

The Bulldogs had five singles by five different players.

At Teutopolis

In a Friday contest, Teutopolis went eight innings before edging Mount Zion, 2-1.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the third and held that until the bottom of the seventh when the Shoes tied the score then won it in the eighth.

T-town had three singles by Jackson Goeckner, Cody Jansen and Jared Bloemer. Drew Thoele had an RBI.

In Saturday play, Teutopolis edged Nashville in the opening game of a doubleheader, 6-5. Once again the Wooden Shoes took the win in the eighth inning.

Nashville held a 5-2 lead after five but the Shoes scored three in the top of the sixth then the winning run in the eighth.

Eric Kremer has a single, home run and three RBI while Jansen hit a solo homer and Mitch Hemmen a single and double. Ethyn Dust added a double and Evan Althoff two singles.

Lee Hardiek took the win, coming on in the fifth, allowing three hits, one run, no walks and striking out four.

In the second contest, the Shoes easily won over Breese Central, 11-0. T-town took a 3-0 first inning lead then had an eight-run fourth.

Dust had a single, double and four RBI while Goeckner added a single and double and Jared Bloemer a double and an RBI.

Jansen threw the win, going five innings, allowing five hits, no walks and striking out four.

Neoga edged Dieterich 1-0 in National Trail Conference action Friday and Drew Ramert threw a no-hitter.

Ramert allowed no hits, one walk and struck out six in the win.

Neoga had only three hits, all singles by  Ramert, Lane Andrews and Butler. Butler added the RBI.

South Central had a five-run fourth and went on to beat Flora, 10-4 in action Friday.

The Cougars had 10 hits  led by Daniel Roberts with a single and double while Ryan McCown had two singles and an RBI.

Ryan Matheny picked up the pitching win, going four innings, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out four.

At Olney

Altamont outlasted Olney in action Friday, 11-7.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first. Olney took a 2-1 lead in the third. Altamont moved ahead 3-2 in the top of the fourth before the Tigers took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the  frame. Altamont finally broke the game open with six runs in the sixth and added on two more in the seventh.

Kaleb Whitt had two doubles and an RBI while Kyle Pemberton had two doubles and two RBI. Noah Teasley added two singles and three RBI and Wyatt Vaughn two singles and an RBI.

Alek Biggs was the winning pitcher going 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, six walks and striking out six.

In a Saturday contest, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Altamont 3-2. Altamont held a 2-1 lead until the sixth when the Hatchets tied then won it in the seventh.

Dalton Armes and Isaac Kramer had a double each while Christian Kessler added two RBI for the Hatchets.

Altamont had seven hits, all singles, by seven different players.

Brownstown/St. Elmo scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings for a 4-1 win over Mulberry Grove Friday.

BSE had six hits led by Nate Philpot with a single, double and an RBI. Philpot also picked up the pitching win on a one-hitter with five walks and 13 strikeouts.

BSE improves to 3-8 on the season.
