EHS Opens Season With Bang, Baseball Roundup

TROY -- Effingham High School opened the baseball season with a bang Wednesday, blanking Troy Triad, 12-2.
The Hearts took a 2-1 first inning lead on a Brett Koester home run.
Then came the second inning. EHS went on a tear, scoring six runs. The Hearts finished out with three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Brett Koester led the way for the Hearts with three singles and three RBI. Kendall Ballman had two doubles and an RBI while Brayton Poland had a single, double and two RBI to lead the Hearts. Ryan Sandifer chipped in with a double and two RBI. The Hearts finished with 14 hits in the contest.
Zack Lee picked up the pitching win, going 3.1 innings, allowing no hits, three walks and striking out three.

Teutopolis edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead on Normal University but couldn't hang on and fell 9-4 in action Wednesday.
T-town led 4-0 after two innings but Normal came back with two in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth.
The Wooden Shoes had seven hits led by lee Hardiek with two singles.

Shelbyville stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back in a 10-0 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown in six innings Wednesday.
BSE had only one hit in the contest, a single by Lewis Brown. The game was the season opener.
