The New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Chad Green struck out seven in 2 2/3 innings, making some Major League baseball history Wednesday.

The Effingham native served up the most strikeouts in a game in big league history by a pitcher who faced eight or fewer batters.

"I absolutely didn't know that when I was pitching today, but I guess it's pretty cool," said Green.

Green has struck out 86 of 209 batters this season.

"I'm just trying to attack the zone and when it happens, it happens," he said.

Green entered the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Cleveland in the sixth inning. He struck out the first batter he faced and then struck out the next batter. The inning ended when Gary Sanchez threw out Carlos Santana attempting to steal.

In the seventh inning, Green struck out the side. He allowed a leadoff double in the eighth before striking out the next two batters.

He didn’t realize it on the mound, but he set a major league record with seven strikeouts, the most ever in Major League history by a pitcher facing eight batters or less.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, Cleveland took the doubleheader winning the opener 2-1 and taking the nightcap 9-4.
