A rural Altamont home is a total loss after a fire occurred late Wednesday morning. No injuries were reported.
Altamont Fire Chief Jon Becker said the structure was owned by Matt and Priscilla Heiser, north and west of Altamont along 200th Street. Becker said that Priscilla Heiser was at home and heard a noise then discovered the fire, which began in the attached garage.
When Altamont Fire Protection District firefighters reached the scene, the garage was fully involved and had spread into the house. Becker said the fire got into the attic and spread throughout the single-story ranch-style house. Crews were inside fighting the fire until the ceilings collapsed and firefighters then evacuated and staged a defensive attack. A vehicle parked outside the garage was also damaged.
The cause is yet to be determined, but Becker called an investigator in to look over the scene. Firefighters were on scene until after 4pm Wednesday.
Altamont firefighters were assisted by companies from Shumway, Brownstown, Beecher City Tri-County, and Effingham, and crews from Farina and Teutopolis were called in for station coverage. Also on scene…A-1 Ambulance, Altamont Police Department, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and Rural Med EMS, along with utility companies.
