Effingham's Nick Gardewine has been called up to the majors by the Texas Rangers.

It's Nick's first shot at the majors. He was brought to the majors due to an injury to Texas pitcher Matt Bush, who has a sprained MCL.

The Rangers, still with a shot at an American League wild card spot, are in Anaheim tonight to play the Angels.

The 24-year-old Gardewine has been pitching at Double A Frisco in Texas. Ironically, Effingham's Brian Shouse has been Nick's pitching coach this season at Frisco.

The news about Gardewine comes the same day as the Atlanta Braves activated St. Anthony graduate Daniel Winkler off the 60-day disabled list. Winkler broke a bone in his pitching arm last season and has been rehabbing since.

Winkler got into the game for the Braves Monday night, picking up the final out in the sixth inning.

Gardewine and Winkler join Chad Green of the New York Yankees as City of Effingham natives to be pitching in the majors this season.
