Newton Post 20 Falls From Division Tourney Play

HIGHLAND -- Newton Post 20 saw its season come to a close with a 7-5 loss to Aviston in the Fifth Division Senior Legion Baseball Tournament Wednesday.

Aviston got on top with two runs in the first inning on three hits. Newton came back with two in the bottom of the first. Aviston then tallied a run in the second and third and two in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. Newton tallied a run in the fifth but Aviston scored a run in the top of the seventh to lead 7-3.

Newton made a comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh with two runs but couldn't make up that four run deficit.

John Grunloh picked up the pitching loss, giving up six runs in 3 1/3 innings. Mitch Jansen worked the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up one run.

Luke Geier led Newton with two singles, a double and two RBI. Matt Goedde had a single and an RBI while Mitch Bierman had a single and two RBI. Nate Meinhart, Grunloh and Ben Britton had a single each.

Newton finishes the season with a 21-6 record.

In other games, Herrin blasted Steeleville 18-3 while Metro East BEARS downed HIghland 8-3.

Today's games feature Aviston against Herrin at 3 followed by Highland taking on the winner of that contest at 7. The winner of game 11 will meet the Metro East BEARS Friday at 3 p.m. for the championship.
