Newton Post #20 Wins at Division Tourney

HIGHLAND -- Newton Post #20 won in Fifth Division Senior Legion Tournament play Tuesday, defeating Carmi Post 5-3.

Carmi jumped on top in the first with three runs. Newton scored three in the second to knot the score and then tallied two in the fourth for the victory.

Nate Meinhart picked up the pitching win, going four innings with two strikeouts, four walks, four hits and three runs. John  Grunloh worked two innings and had two strikeouts, one walk and allowed one hit. Tim Weber threw the seventh for the save.

Matt Goedde had a single and an RBI while Grunloh had a single, Weber two singles, Mitch Jansen a single and an RBI, Nate Cohorst an RBI and Ben Britton a single.

With the win, Newton Post #20 improves to 21-5 and advances to further tournament action Wednesday. Newton Post #20 will take on Aviston at 3 p.m.

In other games Tuesday, Metro East BEARS defeated Aviston 5-2 and Highland won over Herrinn 12-4.

Herrin will now face Steeleville at noon while the Metro East BEARS will take on Highland at 7.
