Jasper County Claims District 23 Tourney Title

Jasper County 20 had a hard-fought time but pulled out a second game victory over Effingham Post 120 to win the Senior Legion District 23 Baseball Tournament Monday.

In the opening contest, Effingham outscored Jasper County 18-13 in a game that went for three hours. Jasper County held a 1-0 first inning lead then pushed across four more runs to lead 5-0 in the second.

However, Effingham came back with six runs in the top of the fourth to lead 6-5. But Jasper County tallied five more runs to move ahead 10-6 in the bottom of the frame.

Effingham tallied three in the fifth to pull within 10-9. Jasper County tallied two in the sixth to lead 12-9. But Effingham came roaring back again with five runs to lead 14-12. Jasper County scored a run in the eighth but Effingham pounded home four more in the eighth for the victory.

Brett Koester had two singles, a double and drove in two runs for Effingham. Kendall Ballman had two singles and an RBI. Lane Koenig added a double. Cody Grove three singles and two RBI, Bryar Jansen two doubles and an RBI and Hudson Graham two singles and an RBI.

Jasper County was led by Nate Meinhart with two singles, a double, triple and five RBI, Mitch Bierman two singles, a double, triple and an RBI, Luke Gier with two singles and an RBI and John Grunloh two singles, Paul Thoele two singles and Nick Cohorst a single and double.

In the second contest, Jasper County came back to tally a 10-3 victory and that gave the squad the championship. The second contest went on until midnight.

Effingham led 2-0 in the top of the second but Jasper County came back with three in the bottom of the frame. Effingham tied in the top of the third but Newton again came back with two to take the lead and never relinquished it.
