Cubs Double Up Struggling Brewers

(Chicago, IL) -- Welington Castillo hit a two-run homer and drove in three as the Cubs doubled up the Brewers 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Luis Valbuena added a solo shot for the Northsiders, who snapped a two-game skid. Jacob Turner struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball as he upped his mark to 5-8. Hector Rondon closed it out for his 23rd save. Khris Davis and Gerardo Parra both hit solo homers as Milwaukee dropped its sixth straight. Jimmy Nelson allowed three runs in six frames to fall to 2-6 with the loss.

Cubs All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo could get an MRI on his ailing lower back. Rizzo has missed the last seven games with tightness and manager Rick Renteria says he's still a bit stiff. Rizzo tweaked his back last week in Cincinnati.


White Sox Face Twins Tonight

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The White Sox start a two-game set with the Twins tonight at Target Field in Minneapolis. Chicago sends Hector Noesi to the hill. He's 8-9 with a 4.75 ERA. Minnesota counters with Tommy Milone, who is 6-4 with a 4.21 ERA. First pitch is at 7:10.

Former White Sox slugger Adam Dunn says he's retiring after this season. Dunn was traded to the Oakland Athletics on Sunday and homered in his first at-bat with his new team Monday. The 34-year-old hit .220 with 20 homers and 54 RBI for Chicago this season.


Cardinals Rally Past Pirates

(St. Louis, MO) -- Matt Holliday singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Cardinals rallied past the Pirates 5-4 in the first of three from Busch Stadium. Kolten Wong hit a pinch-hit two-run homer earlier in the seventh to tie the game at four. Holliday also had a two-run double in the third for the Redbirds, who have won three straight to take over first place in the NL Central. St. Louis now leads Milwaukee by one game in the division after the Brewers lost their sixth straight to the Cubs on Monday. Seth Maness picked up the win in relief and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 41st save with a flawless ninth. Andrew McCutchen homered, Neil Walker had a two-run double and Andrew Lambo doubled in a run for the Bucs, who are three games behind the Cards.  Gerrit Cole yielded all five runs in 6 1/3 frames to suffer the loss and fall to 7-5.

CThe Cardinals play the second of three against the Pirates tonight at Busch Stadium. St. Louis has won three in-a-row to move to 74-63. Adam Wainwright gets the start for the Cards looking for his 16th win. Pittsburgh counters with Jeff Locke.  


Mets Commit Six Errors, Fall To Marlins

(Miami, FL) -- The Mets committed six errors and fell to the Marlins 9-6 in a back-and-forth game from Marlins Park. A.J. Ramos picked up the win in relief to improve to 6-0. Steve Cishek pitched a perfect ninth for his 32nd save. Giancarlo Stanton connected for his 34th home run, while Marcell Ozuna and Casey McGehee both had two hits and two RBI. Dilson Herrera hit his first career home run and drove in three for the Mets, who have dropped four of six. Jeurys Familia took the loss.


Phillies Pitchers Combine For No-Hitter Against Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Cole Hamels and three Phillies relievers combined to pitch a no-hitter, beating the Braves 7-0 from Turner Field. Hamels was pulled after six innings and 108 pitches, he struck out seven and walked five as he improved to 8-6. Relievers Jake Diekman, Ken Giles and closer Jonathan Papelbon each pitched a perfect inning to finish off the fourth no-hitter in the majors this season. Jimmy Rollins went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI-triple, while Ben Revere drove in five. Julio Teheran gave up five runs in 6 2/3 innings to fall to 13-10. Jason Heyward walked twice and stole three bases in the loss.


Giants Top Rockies In Resumed Game

(Denver, CO) -- Hunter Pence's tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth gave the Giants the lead for good as they defeated the Rockies 4-2 in the conclusion of a suspended game from earlier this season at Coors Field. The game restarted tied at two with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and a runner on first. Pence homered in the game back on May 22nd, and Buster Posey added two hits. Jeremy Affeldt got the win. Santiago Casilla, who was on the disabled list when this game initially began, earned his 14th save. Christian Friedrich took the loss and fell to 0-4. Michael Cuddyer went 3-for-4 at the dish in the loss.


Rockies Walk Off Giants

(Denver, CO) -- Charlie Blackmon's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Rockies a 10-9 win over the Giants at Coors Field. Colorado fell behind 4-0 and 7-2 before pulling off the comeback victory. Josh Rutledge was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Ben Paulsen hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer. Reliever LaTroy Hawkins blew the save and grabbed the win.  Colorado improved to 55-83 with the victory. Hunter Pence smacked a three-run bomb helping San Francisco jump out to an early lead. Brandon Crawford had three hits and three RBI for the Giants, whose six-game winning streak came to an end. Sergio Romo took his fourth defeat. San Francisco won a continuation of a suspended game against the Rockies, 4-2, earlier in the day.


Padres Sneak By Diamondbacks

(San Diego, CA) -- Tyson Ross earned his 13th victory helping the Padres get past the Diamondbacks, 3-1, in the first of four at Petco Park. Ross allowed one run and struck out eight over six innings. Kevin Quackenbush picked up his second save after striking out the side in the ninth. Cory Spangenberg's two-run single in the fifth frame was the insurance San Diego needed to win for the fifth time in its last six games. Trevor Cahill walked six and gave up three runs in four-plus innings to fall to 3-10. Miguel Montero knocked in the only run for Arizona. The D'backs have lost five of seven.


Nationals Escape Dodgers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Denard Span crushed two home runs to lead the Nationals offense in a 6-4 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Span finished with three RBI while Jayson Werth and Asdrubal Cabrera added solo shots. Gio Gonzalez improved to 7-9 with six-plus innings of three-run ball while Rafael Soriano notched his 31st save. The Nationals have won three of their last four. Matt Kemp hit a two-run dinger in the loss and Juan Uribe added two RBI. Roberto Hernandez fell to 8-10 with five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings as the Dodgers dropped their third game in the last four contests.


Rays Walk-Off Red Sox

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Matt Joyce hit a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Rays beat Boston 4-3 from Tropicana Field. Will Myers had three hits, drove in a run and scored in the victory.  Grant Balfour picked the win in relief to improve to 2-6. Badenhop fell to 0-3. Mike Napoli slugged his 17th home run of the season, while Mookie Betts added two hits, a run and an RBI in the loss. The win gave the Rays the series split with the Red Sox in the four-game set.


Mauer Drives In Four, Twins Beat The Orioles

(Baltimore, MD) -- Joe Mauer broke a three-all tie in the eighth with a two-run single off Andrew Miller, as the Twins beat the Orioles 6-4 from Camden Yards. Mauer went 3-for-4 with a triple and drove in four runs for Minnesota, which avoided a four-game sweep. Kennys Vargas added two hits and plated two in the win. Phil Hughes permitted three unearned runs in eight innings to improve to 15-9. Glen Perkins shut the door for his 33rd save. Kevin Gausman gave up five runs, four earned, in seven-and-a-third innings to fall to 7-7. Nelson Cruz and Nick Hundley both homered for the Birds, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.


Tigers Rock Indians

(Cleveland, OH) -- Miguel Cabrera's power re-appeared at the right time as he paced the Tigers to a 12-1 win over the Indians in the opener of a four-game series at Progressive Field. Cabrera smacked two home runs with four hits, four runs scored and three RBI. It was Cabera's first long ball since August 2.  David Price bounced back from one of the worst starts in his career earning his 13th win, striking out eight over seven innings of one-run ball. Detroit put four games between them and Cleveland for the second wild card spot with the Mariners between them at 1 1/2 games. Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez also each hit homers in the victory. Corey Kluber didn't make it out of the third inning giving up five runs and three of the home runs to take the loss.  Carlos Santana had the only RBI.


Dunn Homers In First AB As Athletics Sink Mariners

(Oakland, CA) -- Adam Dunn drilled a two-run homer in his first at-bat with his new team as the Athletics cruised to a 6-1 win over the Mariners in the first of three in Oakland. Geovany Soto added a two-run single during the five-run first inning for the A's, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Jason Hammel fired eight innings of one-run, three-hit ball to up his record to 2-5 with Oakland and 10-10 overall.  Brad Miller homered for Seattle's only run.  Chris Young was tagged for five runs and did not make it out of the first inning as he fell to 12-7 with the loss, the M's fourth in five games.


Royals Top Rangers

(Kansas City, MO) -- Salvador Perez tagged a two-run dinger to help the Royals beat the Rangers 4-3 at Kauffman Stadium. Perez finished with three hits and three RBI while Mike Moustakas plated the other run. Yordano Ventura allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings for the victory with Greg Holland locking up his 41st save. Kansas City snapped a three-game skid. Colby Lewis took the loss with four earned runs in seven frames as Texas drops its third straight. Adrian Beltre and Michael Choice drove in a run each in the defeat.


Astros Fire Manager Bo Porter

The Houston Astros have fired manager Bo Porter amid speculation of a deteriorating relationship with general manager Jeff Luhnow. Porter was in just  his second season with the Astros, who are 59-79 this year and already eclipsed last year's win total of 51. A report last week in a Houston paper said Luhnow and Porter have been at odds, primarily over the manager's in-game decisions. Luhnow's statement Monday said the team will try to promote "a consistent and united message throughout the entire organization." Tom Lawless will take over as interim manager for the remainder of the season.
