Cardinals Down Brewers, Cubs Get Past Dodgers

Cardinals Top Brewers

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Cardinals used a three-run seventh inning to pick up a 3-2 win over the Brewers at Busch Stadium. Matt Holliday belted a solo shot for the team's first score. Two batters later, A.J. Pierzynski and Oscar Taveras singled-in back-to-back runs to give them the lead. John Lackey picked up the win in his St. Louis debut by throwing seven innings of two-run ball. Trevor Rosenthal closed it out for his league-leading 34th save as the Cards won their fourth game of their last five. Aramis Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Mark Reynolds went deep for Milwaukee, which has lost five of seven. Jeremy Jeffress took the loss after Matt Garza threw six shutout innings.

The St. Louis Walk of Fame will unveil a sidewalk star to honor former Cardinals catcher and current broadcaster Tim McCarver today. McCarver is currently in his first year of calling St. Louis games after spending 17 years as a baseball analyst for FOX. The two-time All Star spent 12 of his 21 seasons with the Cardinals and was apart of their 1964 and '67 World Series teams.

Last week's trade is coming full circle. The Cardinals are sending John Lackey to the hill Tuesday to start a three-game series against the Red Sox at Busch Stadium. The Red Sox are starting Joe Kelly. The Sox shipped Lackey to the Cards for Kelly and Allen Craig before the deadline.


Jackson Pitches Cubs Past Dodgers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Edwin Jackson tossed six innings of two-run ball to lead the Cubs in a 7-3 win over the Dodgers from Chavez Ravine. Jackson improved to 6-11 while Chris Coghlan hit a two-run homer and Luis Valbuena added a solo shot. Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI double for Chicago, which has won three of four. Josh Beckett gave up three runs in four-plus innings and fell to 6-6 for Los Angeles. Matt Kemp stayed hot with a solo homer, his fifth roundtripper in six games. The Dodgers had won seven of eight.


Twins Cruise Past White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- The Twins used a nine-run eighth inning to pull away for a 16-3 victory over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Danny Santana finished 5-for-6 with four RBI for Minnesota, which has won two straight since a three-game slide. Chris Parmelee, Oswaldo Arcia and Eric Fryer hit back-to-back-to-back solo homers in the ninth. Arcia had three hits and three RBI while Fryer added three hits and drove in two. Kyle Gibson allowed three runs over seven innings to improve to 10-8. Jose Quintana allowed an unearned run over five frames while Javy Guerra took the loss. Dayan Viciedo hit a two-run homer for Chicago, which has lost three of five.


Reds Take Down Marlins

(Miami, FL) -- Mike Leake tossed six innings of one-run ball as the Reds downed the Marlins 7-3 in Miami. Leake improved to 9-9 while Devin Mesoraco went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Todd Frazier had four hits and an RBI while Billy Hamilton went 2-for-5 with three runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Cincinnati has won four out of six. Jacob Turner allowed five runs in four innings and fell to 4-7 for Miami. Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have lost four of five.


Giants Hammer Mets

(Flushing, NY) -- Madison Bumgarner struck out ten and allowed two hits and a walk while leading the Giants in a 9-0 win over the Mets at Citi Field.  Bumgarner went the distance and improved to 13-8 along the way.  Hunter Pence hit a pair of homers and drove in four while scoring three times. Buster Posey was 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI while Brandon Belt added a solo shot. San Francisco has won three of its last four. Bartolo Colon was rocked for six runs in 4 2/3 innings. He fell to 10-9 while Wilmer Flores doubled to account for one of New York's two hits. The Mets have lost three of five.


Nationals Shut Down Phillies

(Washington, DC) -- Stephen Strasburg struck out ten over seven shutout innings as the Nationals blanked the Phillies 4-0 in DC. Strasburg improved to 8-and-9 while Denard Span went 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for Washington. Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth also drove in runs as the Nats won their third in five games. Cole Hamels fell to 6-6 after allowing an unearned run in seven innings for Philadelphia. Cody Asche had two of the three hits for the Phillies, who have dropped three of five.


Cabrera's Single Lifts Padres Past Braves

(San Diego, CA) -- Everth Cabrera ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the tenth to send the Padres to a 4-3 walk-off win over the Braves at Petco Park.  Cabrera finished with two RBI while Tony Medica hit a solo homer in the win. Tyson Ross pitched six-plus innings of two-run ball and drove in a run at the plate while Tim Stauffer earned the win in relief. San Diego has won three straight and five of its last six. Aaron Harang pitched six innings of two-run ball for Atlanta while David Hale took the loss. Jason Heyward was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs for the Braves, who have lost six in-a-row.


Diamondbacks Walk-Off Pirates In 10

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Andy Marte drove in the walk-off run off a fielder's choice in the 10th inning as the Diamondbacks snatched a 3-2 win from the Pirates at Chase Field. Tyler Gosewisch went 2-for-3 and scored the game-winning run. Ender Inciarte and Jordan Pacheco each plated a run for Arizona, which has won three of its last five.  Trevor Cahill struck out seven in seven innings of one-run ball and Evan Marshall picked up the win in relief. Michael Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Pittsburgh and Andrew McCutchen batted in a run. Mark Melancon took the loss for the Pirates, who went 5-5 on their 10-game west coast road trip.


Indians Sweep Rangers

(Cleveland, OH) -- Michael Brantley hit a solo homer in the 12th inning as the Indians walked off on the Rangers 4-3 to complete the three-game sweep from Progressive Field. David Murphy hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and finished with three RBI in the win. Trevor Bauer tossed 7 1/3 innings for the no-decision and Scott Atchison improved to 5-0 out of the pen. Phil Klein took the loss and Neftali Feliz blew his first save for Texas. Yu Darvish struck out eight and gave up one run in seven frames for the no-decision. Alex Rios and Rougned Odor plated runs in the loss.


Orioles Edge Mariners Behind Tillman

(Baltimore, MD) -- Nick Markakis hit a leadoff homer and the Orioles went on to a 1-0 win over the Mariners at Camden Yards. Markakis finished 3-for-4 and a triple shy of the cycle while Chris Tillman improved to 8-and-5 with seven innings of four-hit ball with six strikeouts. Zach Britton notched his 23rd save as Baltimore won its fifth in seven games. Hisashi Iwakuma fell to 9-6 after allowing the one run over seven-and-two-thirds innings for Seattle. Kyle Seager had a hit and stolen base for the M's, who have lost three of five.


Angels Clip Rays

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with two RBI to help guide the Angels to a 7-5 in the rubber match of their three-game series against the Rays from Tropicana Field. David Freese also batted in two runs and Josh Hamilton tallied a pair of hits with an RBI. Jered Weaver threw six innings of two-run ball to improve to 12-6 and Huston Street picked up the save for Anaheim, which has won three of four. Jake Odorizzi got rocked for five runs off eight hits in just three frames of work to fall 7-9. James Loney recorded three hits and batted in two runs for Tampa, which has dropped three of its last four


Royals Double Up Athletics

(Oakland, CA) -- James Shields took a perfect game into the sixth and threw eight innings of two-run ball to guide the Royals to a 4-2 win over the A's at O.co Coliseum. Shields improved to 10-and-6 and Greg Holland closed it out for his 31st save for Kansas City, which has won four of five. Omar Infante went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Salvador Perez and Norichika Aoki each batted in a run in the win. Scott Kazmir gave up all four runs off 10 hits in six innings to fall to 12-and-4.  Josh Reddick blasted two solo shots for the A's, who have lost four of their last six.


Yankees Sneak By Red Sox

(Boston, MA) -- The Yankees didn't wilt as they fought back for an 8-7 win over the Red Sox in the rubber match of a three-game set at Fenway Park. New York trailed 3-0, 5-3 and 7-4.  Brett Gardner's solo homer in the sixth inning gave the Yanks the lead for good and capped a 3-for-4 night with three RBI. Carlos Beltran stayed hot with two hits and two runs scored. Stephen Drew hurt his old team, driving in four including a game-tying two-run single in the fifth inning. Reliever Esmil Rogers picked up the win and David Robertson nailed down his 29th save. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz each left the yard in the loss.  Pedroia was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Ortiz plated three. Reliever Craig Breslow was handed his third loss, but it was Clay Buchholz who let New York stick around giving up seven runs on eight hits and five walks in five innings.


Tigers Blank Rockies

(Detroit, MI) -- Anibal Sanchez struck out 12 over seven innings of two-hit ball as the Tigers blanked the Rockies 4-0 at Comerica Park. Sanchez improved to 8-5 while Victor Martinez went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer. Miguel Cabrera finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk as Detroit won its fourth in five games. Jorge De La Rosa fell to 11-7 after allowing four runs in 6 2/3 innings for Colorado. Drew Stubbs had a hit and stolen base for the Rockies, who have lost four straight after recording just four hits.
