Effingham Post 120 Juniors Down Teutopolis in DH

Lane Koenig hopes every outing could go as well as Sunday, as Koenig threw a shutout to carry American Legion Effingham Junior Post 120 to a 1-0 victory over Teutopolis Post 924 at Evergreen Park in seven innings.

Koenig looked sharp on the mound. Teutopolis Post 924 managed just one hit off Koenig, who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out nine during his seven innings of work. B. Bueker was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted seven innings, walked three, struck out three, and allowed one run.

The lone run of the game for Effingham Junior Post 120 came in the first inning. A lead-off walk from Eli Buhrman was followed by a bunt single by Bryar Jansen. Heads up base running allowed Buhrman to advance to third on the bunt. The game winning run crossed the plate in the first inning on an RBI single by Michael Woltman scoring Buhrman.

An impressive two-way performance from James Kabbes led Effingham to a 7-2 win Sunday over Teutopolis Post 924, as Kabbes came up huge at the dish and on the rubber.Post 120 was led by Kabbes' hitting. Kabbes went 3-for-4, drove in one and scored two runs. He tripled in the third inning and singled in the first and fifth innings. Kabbes struck out seven, paving the way for Effingham's win. The Post 120's pitcher tossed five innings of shutout ball and allowed only four hits.

Effingham got its bats going early, scoring four runs in the first inning to pull ahead of Teutopolis Post 924. Post 120 scored in the first on a two-run single by Woltman, following hits by Blake White and Jansen. Then hits by Drew Gibson, James Kabbes and Zach Bateman scored two more runs for Post 120.

Conner Mette was the game's losing pitcher. He allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings, walked none and struck out three.

Effingham Junior Post 120 added two more runs in the top of the third. The inning looked promising, as Kabbes tripled, scoring Drew Gibson to kick things off. That was followed up by Will Clausius's double, bringing home Kabbes. After pushing across two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Teutopolis Post 924 faced just a 7-2 deficit. An RBI double by Althoff and an RBI single by K. McMahon set off Teutopolis Post 924 rally. The Teutopolis Post 924 threat came to an end when Buhrman finally got J. Kenter to ground out.
