Cardinals Rally Past Reeling Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Matt Carpenter snapped a 6-all tie with an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning as the Cardinals rallied for a 9-6 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.  Matt Holliday went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Matt Adams hit a two-run homer as St. Louis took the rubber match of the three-game series. Pat Neshek picked up the win in relief and Trevor Rosenthal got the final four outs for his 23rd save. Drew Stubbs homered and Corey Dickerson smacked a two-run double for Colorado, which has lost eight of its last nine games. Adam Ottavino blew his second save and fell to 0-3 with the loss.

The Cardinals optioned Pete Kozma back to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, two days after his callup. St. Louis also transferred starting pitcher Joe Kelly from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. They also selected the contract of pitcher Marco Gonzales to start Wednesday's game. He gave up five runs in five innings to take a no decision in his major league debut.

The Cardinals clash with the Dodgers in Los Angeles tonight for the first of four games. St. Louis sends Adam Wainwright to the hill while the Dodgers counter with Josh Beckett. The Cards have won four of five to get to 43-36.


Reds Beat Cubs With Three-Run Sixth

(Chicago, IL) -- Joey Votto doubled in the go-ahead run to jump start a three-run sixth inning as the Reds beat the Cubs 4-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Jay Bruce had a pair of RBI doubles and Skip Schumaker also plated a run for Cincinnati, which has won four of its last five games. Mat Latos tossed seven innings of one-run ball for his first win. Aroldis Chapman closed it out for his 14th save. Starlin Castro singled in the lone run in the fourth inning for the Cubs, who have lost four of five. Edwin Jackson yielded four runs in 5 1/3 frames as he dipped to 5-8.


Orioles Steal Game From White Sox

(Baltimore, MD) -- David Lough scored on a Daniel Webb wild pitch to give the Orioles a 5-4 win over the White Sox in the bottom of the 12th inning at Camden Yards. Nelson Cruz jacked a grand slam in the eighth to tie the game at four. Baltimore took two of three in the series. Reliever Tommy Hunter earned his second win, getting one out on four pitches. Jose Abreu hit his 23rd homer and drove in his 61st run of the season in defeat. Adam Eaton had four hits and an RBI, while Webb took the loss.


Gennett Slam Helps Guide Brewers By Nationals

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Scooter Gennett belted a second-inning grand slam and the Brewers cruised to a 9-2 win over the Nationals at Miller Park. He also had an RBI single as Milwaukee avoided a three-game sweep. Khris Davis also homered and knocked in three for the Brew Crew. Marco Estrada pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball to move to 7-and-4 with the win. Stephen Strasburg was roughed up for seven runs in just 4 2/3 frames to fall to 6-6 with the loss. Nate McLouth and Ian Desmond drove in runs for Washington. The Nats had won their previous four games.


Giants' Lincecum No-Hits Padres

(San Francisco, CA) -- San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum is celebrating his second career no-hitter. He held the San Diego Padres hitless in a 4-0 win at AT&T Park. Lincecum went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and two runs scored. He retired the final 23 batters he faced after a one-out walk in the second inning. Will Venable grounded out to second base to end the game. The two-time National League Cy Young winner walked one and struck out six. Lincecum threw his first career no-hitter also against the Padres just last July in San Diego. Christy Mathewson is the only other Giant with two career no-hitters.


Marlins Edge Phillies

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run double during a three-run fourth inning as the Marlins held on to beat the Phillies 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park. Marcell Ozuna doubled in the other run and scored for the Fish, who have won two-of-three in the four-game series. Henderson Alvarez gave up two runs, just one earned, in six-and-two-thirds innings as he improved to 5-3. Steve Cishek struck out the side in order in the ninth for his 18th save.  Chase Utley and Domonic Brown drove in a run each for the Phils, who have dropped four of five. A.J. Burnett fanned eight in seven frames but allowed all three runs to fall to 5-7 with the loss.


Yankees Clip Blue Jays

(Toronto, Ontario) -- The Yankees avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays by pulling out a 5-3 win in the series finale at the Rogers Centre. Mark Teixeira hit a three-run home run to punctuate a four-run third inning. Hiroki Kuroda earned his fifth win, dealing six-and-one-third innings of three-run ball. David Robertson recorded five outs to nail down his 18th save. Jose Reyes was 3-for-5 with a home run, while Melky Cabrera drove in the other two for Toronto. Drew Hutchison fell to 5-6, allowing four runs in five innings.


Tigers Rough Up Rangers

(Arlington, TX) -- The Tigers collected eight extra-base hits en route to an 8-6 victory over Texas at Globe Life Park. Victor Martinez went deep and drove in two in the win while J.D. Martinez hit a solo-shot and plated two.  Miguel Cabrera added two RBI for the Tigers, who have won six straight. Anibal Sanchez improved to 5-2 after giving up four runs in five-and-a-third and Joe Nathan locked up his 16th save. Adrian Beltre collected three hits and drove in two in the loss while Carlos Pena went deep for the first time as a Ranger. Joe Saunders fell to 0-4 after being rocked for six runs in four-plus innings. The Rangers have dropped seven straight.


Angels Top Twins

(Anaheim, CA) -- Kole Calhoun knocked in two runs to help the Angels top the Twins 6-2 in Anaheim. Erick Aybar scored twice and had an RBI for Los Angeles, which has won five straight. Garrett Richards gave up two runs in 7 1/3 innings to improve to 8-2. Oswaldo Arcia hit a solo homer for Minnesota, which had won four in-a-row prior to losing the first two of this series. Yohan Pino gave up five runs in three frames for the loss.


Red Sox Edge Mariners To Avoid Sweep

(Seattle, WA) -- David Ortiz belted a two-run homer and drove in three as the Red Sox edged the Mariners 5-4 to avoid a three-game sweep at Safeco Field.  Daniel Nava went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Boston, which improved to just 2-and-5 on its 10-game road trip. Clay Buchholz gave up four runs in seven-and-a-third innings as he upped his mark to 3-4. Koji Uehara closed it out for his 16th save. Mike Zunino hit a two-run homer and Kyle Seager and Brad Miller added solo shots for the M's, who had a five-game winning steak snapped. Hisashi Iwakuma permitted all five runs in four frames as he fell to 5-4.


Price Shuts Down Pirates As Rays Avoid Sweep

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- David Price struck out 11 while coming within two outs of a complete game as the Rays beat the Pirates 5-1 at Tropicana Field. Price allowed five hits, one walk and one run in eight-and-a-third innings to improve to 6-7. Ben Zobrist went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and James Loney also had two hits and an RBI as Tampa Bay avoided a three-game sweep. Charlie Morton also fanned 11, but allowed three runs in seven frames to fall to 4-9 with the loss. Andrew McCutchen broke up the shutout with a solo homer in the top of the ninth for Pittsburgh's lone run.


Athletics Top Mets

(Flushing, NY) -- Yoenis Cespedes hit a three-run double and Brandon Moss added a two-run homer as the Athletics defeated the Mets 8-5 to split the two-game Interleague series at Citi Field. Coco Crisp went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI for the A's, who have won six of their last eight. Brad Mills scattered nine hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings for his first win. Sean Doolittle fanned all three batters he faced in the ninth for his 11th save. Lucas Duda belted a three-run homer in the seventh and Chris Young hit a two-run shot in the eighth for the Mets, who had won their previous three. Zack Wheeler was rocked for six runs in two frames as he dipped to 3-8.


Braves Blank Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Justin Upton hit a two-run homer and knocked in three runs to help the Braves top the Astros 4-0 from Minute Maid Park. Alex Wood tossed seven scoreless innings for his sixth win. Atlanta has won the first two games of this three-game series. Collin McHugh allowed three runs and struck out nine over seven innings for the loss. Houston has lost four in-a-row and eight of its last nine games.


Dodgers Top Royals

(Kansas City, MO) -- A.J. Ellis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Dodgers dropped the Royals 5-4 in Kansas City. Matt Kemp hit a solo home run while Dee Gordon was 4-for-5 with two runs and his 40th steal of the season. Jamey Wright picked up the win for Los Angeles, which has won seven of nine. Brian Wilson locked up his first save. Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson each went deep for Kansas City, which has lost six of seven. Wade Davis took the loss.


Indians Down Diamondbacks

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Corey Kluber and three relievers combined to help the Indians beat the Diamondbacks 6-1 to split the two-game series at Chase Field. Kluber struck out eight while giving up four hits and one walk as he improved to 7-5. Michael Brantley homered, drove in two and scored twice, while Yan Gomes also went deep for Cleveland, which snapped a four-game skid. Miguel Montero broke up the shutout with an RBI single in the ninth for the D'backs, who have dropped three of four. Chase Anderson allowed four runs in five frames as he fell to 5-3 with his third straight loss.
