Schierholtz Homer Helps Cubs Take Rubber Match From Marlins

(Miami, FL) -- Nate Schierholtz hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to help the Cubs pull away for a 6-1 win over the Marlins in Miami. Starlin Castro went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI doubles, including the go-ahead two-bagger in the sixth ahead of Schierholtz's homer. Jake Arrieta struck out 11 while allowing just five hits and one run in seven innings for the win. Chicago took two-of-three in the series. Nathan Eovaldi was touched for nine hits and five runs in six innings of work to take the loss. Giancarlo Stanton homered for the lone Marlins' run in the first, but later left with a wrist injury.

Cubs starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija may not be in Chicago for much longer. The "Sun-Times" reported Monday he turned down a five-year contract worth around $60-million. Wednesday, FOX Sports said it was more in the neighborhood of $85-million. Samardzija is 2-6 with a 2.78 ERA this season.

Third baseman Kris Bryant is on the move. The Cubs promoted him from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa Wednesday. Bryant was taken second overall in the 2013 draft. He batted .355 with 22 home runs and 58 RBI in 68 games in Double-A.

Cubs 2014 first round pick Kyle Schwarber is heading to Class-A Kane County. He was promoted from short-season Boise Wednesday after just five games. The fourth overall pick in this month's draft hit .600 with four home runs in 20 at-bats in the Northwest League.


Mets Hold Off Cardinals To Avoid Sweep

(St. Louis, MO) -- Eric Young Jr. had a pair of run-scoring doubles as the Mets edged the Cardinals 3-2 at Busch Stadium. David Wright also had an RBI single for New York, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Bartolo Colon surrendered just four hits and one run in eight innings to improve to 7-5 with the win. After Jenrry Mejia gave up a run in the ninth, Dana Eveland came on to get the final out and preserve the win with his first save. Lance Lynn gave up two runs in six frames to fall to 7-5 with the loss. Matt Carpenter homered and Allen Craig singled in a run for St. Louis.

Adam Wainwright will return to the Cardinals' starting rotation on Saturday. He tossed about 40 pitches Wednesday morning at Busch Stadium. Wainwright missed his last start due to right elbow tendinitis. He is 9-3 with a 2.15 ERA this season.


White Sox Down Giants For Two-Game Sweep

(Chicago, IL) -- Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn each belted home runs and the White Sox held on for a 7-6 win over the Giants at U.S. Cellular Field. Abreu hit his 20th of the year with a man on in the first and Dunn connected for a three-run shot in the fifth to put Chicago ahead 7-2. Tyler Flowers had a two-run single as the Sox swept the two-game Interleague series. Chris Sale pitched six innings of three-run ball to improve to 6-1. Ronald Belisario posted his seventh save. Tim Hudson was tagged for 12 hits and seven runs in less than five innings to fall to 7-3. Buster Posey drove in two runs for San Francisco.


Kershaw, Dodgers No-Hit Rockies

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Clayton Kershaw struck out a career-high 15 in his first no-hitter as the Dodgers dropped the Rockies 8-0 from L.A. It's the 22nd no-hitter in L.A. Dodgers history. The one base runner allowed was due to a Hanley Ramirez error in the seventh. Kershaw improved to 7-2 while Los Angeles swept the three-game series. Adrian Gonzalez and Matt Kemp each had two RBI in the win while Miguel Rojas had three. Jorge De La Rosa allowed eight runs in under four innings for the loss. Colorado had won five in-a-row heading into this series.


Phillies Double Up Braves To Complete Sweep

(Atlanta, GA) -- Marlon Byrd went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI to help power the Phillies to a 10-5 win over the Braves at Turner FIeld. John Mayberry Jr. also plated three runs as Philadelphia swept the three-game series.  Ryan Howard had three hits and two RBI for the Phils, who have won seven of their last nine games overall. Roberto Hernandez pitched six innings of five-run ball for the win. Aaron Harang was tagged for 13 hits and nine runs in five frames to fall to 5-and-6 with the loss. Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer and Ryan Doumit also went deep for Atlanta in defeat.


Reds Roll Against Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Billy Hamilton and Skip Schumaker each drove in three runs to help guide the Reds to an 11-4 win over the Pirates at PNC Park. Brandon Phillips and Zack Cosart both tallied an RBI for Cincinnati, which has won six of seven. Alfredo Simon gave up three runs in six-and-a-third innings to improve to 10-3. Edinson Volquez got rocked for eight runs in less than three frames to fall to 4-6 for the Pirates, who have lost three straight. Jose Tabata drove in two runs in defeat.  Gregory Polanco became the first Pirate to hit safely in his first eight big league games since Spencer Adams in 1923.


Diamondbacks Edge Brewers In Ninth

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Tony Campana singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Diamondbacks to a 4-3 win over the Brewers in the third installment of a four-game series at Chase Field. Chris Owings finished a home run short of the cycle and drove in a run, while Paul Goldschmidt and Aaron Hill also plated a run each as Arizona won for just the second time in eight games. Brad Ziegler picked up the win in relief of starter Wade Miley, who tossed 7 2/3 innings of three-run ball. Khris Davis clubbed a three-run homer for Milwaukee, which had won its previous two. Brandon Kintzler fell to 1-3 with the loss.


Royals Edge Tigers For 10th Straight Win

(Detroit, MI) -- Omar Infante homered to back a solid outing by Jeremy Guthrie as the Royals edged the Tigers 2-1 in Detroit for their 10th straight win.  Alex Gordon's infield single off the second base bag plated a run in the first for KC. Infante followed with his fourth home run in the fifth to stake KC to a 2-0 lead. Guthrie struck out nine while allowing just four hits and one run in six-and-two-thirds innings for the win. Greg Holland got the final three outs for his 21st save. J.D. Martinez homered for Detroit in the seventh. Drew Smyly threw seven innings of two-run ball to take the tough-luck loss.


Orioles Blank Rays To Take Rubber Match

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Kevin Gausman and two relievers combined on a five-hitter as the Orioles shut out the Rays 2-0 at Tropicana Field. Gausman gave up five hits over six innings to move to 3-and-1 with the win. Zach Britton fanned two in the ninth en route to his ninth save as Baltimore took two-of-three in the series. Steve Pearce doubled in a run in the fifth and Nelson Cruz clubbed his major league-leading 22nd home run in the eighth for the Birds. Alex Cobb allowed just an unearned run in seven innings of work to fall to 2-5 with the tough-luck loss. Evan Longoria and David DeJesus had doubles for Tampa.


Ortiz, Napoli Homers Lift Red Sox In 10

(Boston, MA) -- David Ortiz and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Red Sox rallied for a 2-1 win over the Twins at Fenway Park. Chris Parmelee's solo shot in the top of the inning had given Minnesota a 1-0 lead. Koji Uehara gave up Parmelee's homer but got credit for the win. John Lackey struck out nine while pitching nine innings of three-hit ball. Casey Fien gave up both blasts in the 10th to take the loss as the Twins were swept in the three-game series. Kyle Gibson fanned eight over seven innings of one-hit ball in a no-decision.


Athletics Double Up Rangers In Rubber Match

(Oakland, CA) -- Brandon Moss snapped a 2-all tie with an RBI double in the fifth inning and the A's went on to beat the Rangers 4-2 at O.co Coliseum. John Jaso also had an RBI double and Josh Donaldson and Stephen Vogt drove in runs for Oakland. Sonny Gray struck out seven over seven innings of two-run ball to improve to 7-3. Sean Doolittle closed it out for his ninth save as the Athletics took two of three in the series. Nick Tepesch allowed all four runs in five innings to drop to 2-and-3 with the loss. Shin-Soo Choo singled in both runs for Texas in the fifth to tie the game at two.


Angels-Indians Rained Out In Cleveland

(Cleveland, OH) -- Wednesday's game between the Angels and Indians in Cleveland is being postponed due to rain. A makeup date has not been announced. The teams will wrap up their series on Thursday afternoon.


Yankees Drop Blue Jays

(Bronx, NY) -- Brian McCann hit a two-run homer and totaled five RBI to lead the Yankees to a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium. Ichiro Suzuki and Alfonso Soriano also drove in a run each for New York, which has won six of its last eight. Chase Whitley surrendered two runs in five frames to improve to 3-0. Mark Buehrle gave up two earned runs in six innings of work for the tough loss for the Blue Jays, who have dropped three of four. Jose Bautista and Colby Rasmus each batted in a run in defeat.


Nationals Edge Astros

(Washington, D.C.) -- The Nationals used a three-run seventh inning to help lift them to a 6-5 win over the Astros at Nationals Park. Anthony Rendon hit a solo homer, and Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond each totaled two hits and an RBI for Washington, which completed the two-game sweep of the Astros. Gio Gonzalez struck out six in five frames for the no-decision in his first game since May 17. Aaron Barrett got the win with Rafael Soriano picking up his 15th save.  Darin Downs fell to 1-1 for the Astros, who have lost four of five. Matt Dominguez drove in two runs for Houston.


Padres Clip Mariners

(San Diego, CA) -- Tommy Medica's pinch-hit, one-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Padres a 2-1 win over the Mariners at Petco Park.  Alexi Amarista scored on a Felix Hernandez wild pitch in the sixth to tie the game at one. Reliever Joaquin Benoit picked up his third victory, and Huston Street nailed down his 19th save. San Diego ended a three-game losing streak. Hernandez struck out 10 over seven innings of one-run ball for the no decision. Charlie Furbush took the loss. Brad Miller had the lone RBI for Seattle, which had won three straight. The Padres honored the late Tony Gwynn prior to the start of the game.
