Royals Blank Cardinals, Dodgers Get Past White Sox

Royals Blank Cardinals

(St. Louis, MO) -- Danny Duffy tossed six shutout innings as the Royals blanked the Cardinals 6-0 at Busch Stadium. Duffy allowed a hit and a walk while striking out five and improving to 3-5. Alex Gordon hit a solo homer while Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Mike Moustakas also knocked in two for Kansas City, which has won three out of five. Shelby Miller was tagged for four runs over seven innings and fell to 6-5 for St. Louis. Matt Holliday had two hits and a walk for the Cards, who have dropped five of their last six.

The Cardinals clash with the Royals again tonight at Busch Stadium. The teams will then head to Kansas City for two more games tomorrow and Thursday. Jaime Garcia gets the ball tonight for the Cards. He is 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA in three starts. KC will counter with James Shields, who is 6-3 with a 3.36 ERA.

Cubs Host Mets

(Chicago, IL) -- The Cubs are back home to start a six-game homestand tonight. Chicago hosts the Mets at Wrigley Field. Jake Arrieta takes the hill for the Cubs. He is 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA in five starts. The Mets will counter with right-hander Zack Wheeler, who is 2-5 with a 4.31 ERA.

Dodgers Get Past White Sox

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Dodgers put together a five-run sixth inning to get a 5-2 victory over the White Sox at Chavez Ravine. Clayton Kershaw benefited from the offense after pitching eight innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts. He improved to 4-2 while Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 17th save. All five runs Los Angeles scored were unearned with Jacob Turner knocking in two. The Dodgers had lost four of their last five. Chicago committed three errors in the contest as Jose Quintana dropped to 3-5. He allowed the five unearned runs over six frames. Jose Abreu returned from the disabled list and hit a two-run homer for the Sox, who have dropped three of four.

White Sox rookie Jose Abreu made an impact in his return from the disabled list last night. The first baseman took Clayton Kershaw deep for a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his 16th of the season. Abreu finished 1-for-4 in the contest.

The White Sox and Dodgers continue their three-game series in Los Angeles tonight. Chicago sends Hector Noesi to the mound in search of his first victory.  The Dodgers counter with Dan Haren, who is 5-3 on the year. First pitch from Dodger Stadium is set for 9:10.

Mets Stomp Phillies

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Wilmer Flores smacked a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to help the Mets rock the Phillies, 11-2, at Citizens Bank Park.  Flores finished with two hits and six RBI, while Curtis Granderson and David Wright each drove in two. Bartolo Colon evened up his record at five allowing two runs in seven innings. New York took four of five from the Philadelphia. Ryan Howard drove in his 40th run in defeat. Roberto Hernandez dropped to 2-and-3 giving up five runs, four earned, in 5 1/3 innings.

Pirates Pound Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- Jordy Mercer went 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored as the Pirates pounded the Padres 10-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park. Neil Walker had three hits and three RBI for Pittsburgh, which has won four-of-five. Charlie Morton struck out nine over five innings of two-run ball as he improved to 2-7. Everth Cabrera, Seth Smith and Yonder Alonso drove in a run each for the Friars, who have dropped two in-a-row. Tim Stauffer allowed two runs in less than three frames to fall to 2-2 with the loss.

Masterson, Indians Down Red Sox

(Cleveland, OH) -- Justin Masterson struck out ten over seven scoreless innings to lead the Indians in a 3-2 win over the Red Sox at Progressive Field.  Masterson gave up four walks and three hits while improving to 3-4. Cody Allen locked down his four save for Cleveland, which has won four straight. Michael Bourn went 2-for-3 and scored twice while Lonnie Chisenhall knocked in a pair in the win. Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Boston, which saw a seven-game win streak end. A victory would've given the Sox the longest win streak following a double-digit losing streak in MLB history. John Lackey fell to 6-4 after giving up three runs in eight innings.

Mariners Pound Yankees

(Bronx, NY) -- Kyle Seager went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and three runs scored as the Mariners pounded the Yankees 10-2 in the Bronx. The teams were making up a rainout from April 30. Michael Saunders also went deep and drove in three in Seattle's third straight win. Robinson Cano was 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored against his former team. Felix Hernandez struck out eight over seven innings of two-run ball as he moved to 8-1 with his fifth consecutive victory. Ichiro Suzuki plated both runs on an infield single for the Yankees, who have lost three-of-four. David Phelps allowed six runs in six frames as he dipped to 1-3.

Wolf Leads Marlins Past Rays

(Miami, FL) -- Randy Wolf tossed six innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts as the Marlins dropped the Rays 3-1 in Miami. Wolf improved to 1-1 while three relievers bridged the gap to Steve Cishek, who notched his 12th save. Ed Lucas went 2-for-4 while Casey McGehee laced a two-run single for the Marlins, who stopped a three-game slide. Desmond Jennings was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Tampa Bay, which holds the worst record in the American League. Alex Cobb fell to 1-3 after allowing three runs over six innings. The Rays have lost seven in-a-row.

Brewers Handle Twins

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Matt Garza struck out eight over 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball to guide the Brewers past the Twins 6-2 at Miller Park. Garza improved to 3-4 for Milwaukee, which has won five of six. Jonathan Lucroy grabbed three hits and a homer while Mark Reynolds drove in two with a home run. Joe Mauer doubled twice in the loss while Josh Willingham and Brian Dozier each grabbed an RBI. Kyle Gibson fell to 4-5 after a four-run performance over six innings. Minnesota has lost two of three.
