Effingham Finishes Play in Ohio Valley Regional

The Effingham 12s picked up another victory, then suffered its second loss to exit the Ohio Valley Regional Saturday in Elizabethtown, Ky.
Effingham opened Saturday play with a 10-2 victory over Western Louisville. Effingham established itself early with a five-run first inning. Breet Koester reached base on a fielding error and advanced to second base. Mason Hull singled and Koester took third. Hull then stole second. Cody Jansen earned a walk to load the bases. With a fly ball out by Drew Gibson, Koester scored. Lee Hardiek then singled to bring home two more runs. and eventually came home on a throwing error. Cody Grove singled and stole second. He then came home on a double by Callaway Campton.
Effingham tallied three more in the second. Koester singled to second base with one out. Then with two outs, Koester stole second. Jansen doubled to right center bringing Koester home. Drew Gibson singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw. Jansen took third. Gibson advanced to third on a wild pitch and Jansen scored. Lee Hardiek drew a walk and then stole second. Gibson scored on a throwing error.
The final two runs came in the fourth. Jansen drew a walk and took second on a passed ball. Gibson singled and Jansen advanced to third. Gibson stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Ryan Sandifer drew a walk and stole second. Grove then singled to center field driving in a run.
Gibson, Levitt and Sandifer combined in pitching. Levitt picked up the win as he went three innings allowing two hits, two runs, three walks and striking out five. Gibson was named player of the game for Effingham.
Effingham then advanced to face Johnson County, Ky. and suffered a 5-4 loss to exit the tournament. Johnson County took a 3-0 second inning lead and led 4-2 after four. Effingham came back with two runs to knot the score in the top of the fifth. Hull singled to right field and took second on a wild pitch. Jansen walked and both runners advanced on another wild pitch. Gibson grounded out but brought home a run. Hardiek walked and stole second. With two outs, Grove singled home a run.
But Johnson County came back with a run in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the win. With two outs, Gabe Ferrell reached base on an error and took second on a wild pitch. Ryan Moore then singled home the winning run. Hull was named player of the game for Effingham.
Johnson County advanced but fell to Janesville, Wis. 7-1. Mattoon downed Southeastern Lexington, Ky. 6-4 to reach the title contest and squared off against Janesville, Wis. Mattoon came out the champion with a 5-1 victory.
