EHS Picks Up DH Win Over Charleston, Area Roundup

Effingham High School claimed an Apollo Conference doubleheader over Charleston Saturday.

The Hearts won the opener 6-1, scoring quickly with a run in the first and five in the second. Swayde Sanders went two-for-two on the day with a single in the first and second innings and drove in two runs. Kevin Daugherty racked up six strikeouts, allowing one earned run, seven hits and no walks over seven innings.

Carter Hayes had a double and drove in two runs for EHS while Brayden Bone had two singles.

The lone run for Charleston came in the fifth on an RBI single by Engelkes.

In the second contest, Preston Walker tossed a shutout to carry the Hearts to a 1-0 win. Walker pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts.

The Hearts scored the only run they would need in the fourth.

In freshman/sophomore action, Effingham was a 2-1 winner in the opening game. In the second contest, the Hearts won 5-3 to improve to 4-3.

At Vandalia

Brownstown/St. Elmo split victories Saturday in the Vandalia Tournament. BSE fell to host Vandalia 8-6 then came back for a 20-10 wi over Mulberry Grove.

In the opener, Vandalia was in charge from the start despite BSE tying the score in the second and third innings.

Levi Maxey led BSE with a single, double and an RBI.

In the second contest, BSE led 9-8 in the top of the third then brought home 10 runs to pull away for the 10-10 win.

Jacob Behrends had two home runs and finished with five RBI for the Bombers. Dalton Parks scored five runs. Drake Hall and Malachi Maxey had a double and an RBI each while Dustin Lawson had two singles and drove in two runs.

Brownstown/St. Elmo is now 5-6.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg handed Decatur St. Teresa a 4-1 loss Saturday at the Charlie Doe Wood Bat Tournament. W/SS took a 2-1 first inning lead and tallied two more in the third.

W/SS had seven hits led by Alex Allen with two singles and Jacob Kramer with three singles.

In the second contest of the day, Windsor/Stew-Stras fell to Champaign Central 7-4. Windsor/Stew-Stras held a 4-3 lead after after three inniings. Champaign Central came back with a four-run fourth.

Christian Vonderheide had a double and an RBI while Hayden Cole, also had a double and an RBI. Bryse Bugger had two doubles.
