Cardinals Beat Cubs

(St. Louis, MO) -- Matt Carpenter knocked in three runs to guide the Cardinals to a 6-4 win over the Cubs at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig scored twice for St. Louis, which improved to 7-5. Michael Wacha struck out eight and allowed three runs in six-and-one-third innings for the win. Trevor Rosenthal locked up his fourth save. Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run home run for Chicago, which dropped to 4-8. Junior Lake scored twice in defeat. Edwin Jackson allowed four runs in six innings for the loss.

The Cubs are off to New York where they start a brief two-game series with the Yankees Tuesday night. Chicago will send right-hander Jason Hammel to the hill sporting a 2-0 record. The Yanks counter with newcomer Masahiro Tanaka.

The Cubs are placing top prospect Javier Baez on the disabled list at Triple-A Iowa. Baez is dealing with a left ankle sprain he suffered while taking ground balls during batting practice on Friday. The move is retroactive to April 11. The 21-year-old was a top pick in the 2011 draft.

The Cardinals start a three-game set with the Brewers in Milwaukee tonight. The Brewers have won nine straight games.

The St. Louis Cardinals are keeping general manager John Mozeliak around a bit longer. The two sides agreed to a two-year extension to keep Mozeliak in St. Louis through the 2018 season. He has been with the franchise for 19 years and has been the GM since 2008. The Cards have been to the postseason four times and won the World Series in 2011 since he took over.  


White Sox Walk Off On Indians

(Chicago, IL) -- Alexei Ramirez lifted a two-run, walk-off home run to give the White Sox a 4-3 win over the Indians at U.S. Cellular Field. Marcus Semien also went deep for Chicago, which improved to 7-6. Jose Quintana struck out six and allowed one run in six innings for a no decision. Matt Lindstrom picked up the win. Michael Brantley had a solo homer and scored twice for Cleveland, which dropped to 6-7. John Axford took the loss.

The White Sox have the day off, but are back on the field Tuesday. Chicago welcomes the Boston Red Sox to U.S. Cellular Field for a three-game series. The ChiSox send Erik Johnson and his 0-and-1 record to the mound. Boston counters with right-hander Jake Peavy.


Braves Blast Nationals

(Atlanta, GA) -- Justin Upton lifted a two-run homer and scored twice to help the Braves beat the Nationals 10-2 from Turner Field. Freddie Freeman also belted a two-run shot for Altanta, which improved to 8-and-4 with the three-game sweep. Andrelton Simmons was 2-for-5 with a three-run jack and a triple in the win. Aaron Harang gave up one run in six innings for his second win. Gio Gonzalez allowed six runs in as many innings for the loss. Adam LaRoche hit a solo home run for Washington, which dropped to 7-5.


Phillies Nip Marlins

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Chase Utley hit a game-winning solo homer in the eighth inning to help the Phillies beat the Marlins 4-3 at Citizens Bank Park. Utley was 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Philadelphia, which improved to 6-and-6 with the three-game sweep. Wil Nieves and Tony Gwynn Jr. also had three hits each for the Phils. Nieves doubled in two runs to tie the game at three in the fifth.  Antonio Bastardo picked up the win, and Jonathan Papelbon had the save. Garrett Jones lifted a solo homer for Miami, which dropped to 5-8. Mike Dunn took the loss.


Brewers Stay Hot, Sweep Pirates

(Milwaukee, WI) -- The Brewers picked up their ninth straight win with a 4-1 victory over the Pirates from Miller Park. Kyle Lohse allowed four hits and one run with nine strikeouts across eight-and-two-thirds innings for the win. Will Smith notched the one-out save for Milwaukee, which is 10-2. Aramis Ramirez knocked in a run for the Brew Crew. Andrew McCutchen drove in the lone RBI for Pittsburgh, which dipped to 6-6. Charlie Morton allowed two earned runs and four total in seven frames for the loss.


Giants Walk Off On Rockies In 10th

(San Francisco, CA) -- Brandon Crawford hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning lifting the Giants to a 5-4 win against the Rockies at AT&T Park. San Francisco took two of three despite blowing a 4-1 lead. Crawford drove in two, while Pablo Sandoval hit his second long ball of the season.  Reliever Sergio Romo earned the win. Wilin Rosario and Justin Morneau each hit solo shots in the loss. Reliever Rex Brothers fell to 1-1 following the game-winning homer.


Dodgers Hold D'backs

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Adrian Gonzalez continued his domination of the Diamondbacks as the Dodgers grabbed an 8-6 win at Chase Field to complete a three-game sweep. Gonzalez launched a three-run homer in the third inning as he finished the set with seven hits, three homers and 10 RBI. Matt Kemp and Juan Uribe also left the yard, while Dan Haren grabbed the win leaving after two outs in the fifth and allowing three runs. Kenley Jansen locked up his fourth save.  Mark Trumbo made things interesting connecting for a three-run shot in the sixth to pull Arizona within two in the seventh, but they couldn't complete the comeback. It was Trumbo's sixth homer of the year. Trevor Cahill fell to 0-4 giving up six earned runs in four-plus innings. His ERA is up to 9.17. Arizona has lost all five meetings this season to Los Angeles.  


Twins Clip Royals

(Minneapolis, MN) -- It was scoreless through most of the day, but the Twins put up two in the seventh and two in the eighth to pull out a 4-3 win over the Royals at Target Field. The victory gave Minnesota a three-game sweep. Josmil Pinto launched a two-run homer, while Kevin Correia was charged with three runs in seven-plus innings.  Reliever Casey Fien was credited with the win and Glen Perkins nailed down his third save. Eric Hosmer's two-run shot highlighted a three-run eighth for Kansas City. The bullpen couldn't hold the 3-2 lead with Aaron Crow taking his first loss of the season.


Rangers Blank Astros

(Arlington, TX) -- The Rangers picked up the rubber match of their three-game set with the Astros, 1-0, in Arlington behind eight scoreless innings from starter Martin Perez. Perez improved to 2-0. A Donnie Murphy RBI sac fly was the only run in the game. Murphy replaced shortstop Elvis Andrus who was ejected in the third inning, Josh Wilson moved over to shortstop with Murphy playing second. Brett Oberholtzer took the tough luck loss striking out seven over seven innings. Houston compiled five hits and had two players caught stealing.  


A's Blank M's

(Seattle, WA) -- Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Donaldson each went deep to power the Athletics to a 3-0 win over the Mariners at Safeco Field. Cespedes left the park with a two-run shot in the eighth, and Donaldson hit his one inning later.  Scott Kazmir struck out nine over six innings of two-hit ball for a no decision.  Dan Otero picked up the win, and Sean Doolittle had the save for Oakland, which improved to 8-4. Chris Young gave up four hits in six innings for a no decision while Charlie Furbush took the loss. Robinson Cano was 2-for-4 for Seattle, which dropped to 6-5.


Yankees Edge Red Sox Behind Beltran

(Bronx, NY)  --  Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer as the Yankees held on for a 3-2 win over the Red Sox in the Bronx.  Francisco Cervelli added an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth inning before leaving with an injury.  Ivan Nova tossed seven-and-a-third innings of two-run ball to move to 2-and-1 while Shawn Kelley notched his third save.  New York has won three out of four.  Felix Doubront gave up three runs across six-and-two-thirds innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2 for Boston.  Mike Napoli lifted a solo homer in defeat as the Sox lost their third in four games.


Reds Roll Rays

(Cincinnati, OH)  --  Chris Heisey belted a pinch-hit grand slam to help the Reds roll the Rays 12-4 from Great American Ball Park.  Devin Mesoraco also had four RBI, including a three-run homer.  Joey Votto lifted a two-run homer and scored twice in for Cincinnati, which improved to 4-and-8.  Tony Cingrani struck out six and allowed two runs in six-and-a-third innings for the win.  Ben Zobrist hit two homers and knocked in four runs for Tampa Bay, which dropped to 7-and-6.


Angels Rout Mets

(Anaheim, CA) -- Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Raul Ibanez hit three consecutive home runs in the first inning to help the Angels beat the Mets 14-2 in Anaheim. Hank Conger and Ian Stewart also went deep for Los Angeles, which improved to 6-6. Stewart ended with three RBI while Conger, Ibanez and Erick Aybar had two for the Halos. C.J. Wilson allowed two runs and struck out nine in seven innings for the win. Bartolo Colon gave up nine runs in five innings for the loss. David Wright had the only RBI for New York, which slipped to 5-7.


Padres Drop Tigers

(San Diego, CA) -- Tyson Ross' strong outing helped the Padres pick up a 5-1 win over the Tigers in the rubber match of a three-game set at Petco Park. Ross went seven innings, striking out seven and allowing one-run on six hits, and he improved to 1-2. Jedd Gyorko and Xavier Nady each hit solo shots, while Will Venable drove in two as San Diego jumped to 5-7.  Victor Martinez had the only RBI for the Detroit. Max Scherzer struck out 10 in five innings, but allowed four runs and walked three. Scherzer took his first loss of the season. The Tigers are 6-4.
