Reds Blank Cardinals To Avoid Sweep

(St. Louis, MO) -- Mike Leake and Manny Parra combined on a four-hitter as the Reds shut out the Cardinals 4-0 at Busch Stadium. Leake struck out three while allowing four hits and one walk over eight innings for his first win. Devin Mesoraco hit a two-run homer and Billy Hamilton went 3-for-4 with two steals and two runs scored as Cincinnati avoided a three-game sweep. Shelby Miller allowed seven hits and three runs over six frames to fall to 0-and-2 with the loss. Matt Adams had the lone extra-base hit for St. Louis with a double. Kolten Wong, Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina had the other Cardinals' hits in defeat.


Cubs Hold Off Pirates

(Chicago, IL) -- Mike Olt belted a two-run homer and drove in three as the Cubs held on to beat the Pirates 7-5 in the middle of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Junior Lake added a solo homer and knocked in two, while Anthony Rizzo finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Northsiders, who upped their record to 3-5. Jason Hammel struck out six over seven innings of three-run ball as he improved to 2-0. Russell Martin and Pedro Alvarez both homered twice, while Travis Snider also hit a solo shot for Pittsburgh, which fell to 5-3. Wandy Rodriguez yielded four runs and nine hits in five frames as he slipped to 0-2.


Rockies Ruin White Sox With Six-Run Eighth

(Denver, CO) -- D.J. LeMahieu singled in two runs to ignite a six-run eighth inning as the Rockies pulled away to beat the White Sox 10-4 at Coors Field.  Carlos Gonzalez's two-run double capped the frame for Colorado, which took two-of-three in the series. LeMahieu finished 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Rockies, who had 16 hits in all.  Rex Brothers retired the only two batters he faced in relief to get the win. Scott Downs took the loss, but Ronald Belisario allowed five runs in just a third of an inning in relief of Downs. Adam Eaton had two hits and an RBI and Conor Gillaspie singled in two runs for Chicago.

The White Sox finished Wednesday's game in Denver without outfielder Avisail Garcia. He left in the sixth inning after trying to make a catch. He jammed his left shoulder, but initial X-rays were negative. Garcia will have an MRI today in Chicago. He's batting .267 with two home runs and four RBI in eight games this season.


Werth's Slam Lifts Nationals Past Marlins

(Washington, DC) -- Jayson Werth smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Nationals past the Marlins 10-7 in the middle of a three-game set in DC.  Werth drove in five runs total, while Bryce Harper added a three-run blast for the Nats, who have won three in-a-row. Tyler Clippard picked up the win in relief, while Rafael Soriano closed it out for his second save. Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer and Jarrod Saltalamacchia added a solo shot for the Fish, who fell to 5-4 with their third straight loss. Garrett Jones added three hits and two RBI in defeat. Carlos Marmol suffered the loss.


Brewers Blast Phillies

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Carlos Gomez was 3-for-5 with a solo home run as the Brewers downed the Phillies 9-4 from Citizens Bank Park. Mark Reynolds also left the yard for Milwaukee, which has won five straight. Ryan Braun added two RBI for the Brew Crew. Tyler Thornburg picked up the win in relief of Matt Garza, who allowed four runs in six innings. Marlon Byrd knocked in two runs for Philadelphia, which dipped to 3-5.  Roberto Hernandez struck out nine in five innings of four-run ball for a no decision. Antonio Bastardo suffered the loss.


Braves Hold Off Mets

(Atlanta, GA) -- Ervin Santana dazzled the Mets in his season debut as the Braves held on for a 4-3 win at Turner Field. Santana allowed three hits and struck out six in eight innings for the win. Craig Kimbrel dealt with trouble in the ninth but locked up his fourth save. Jason Heyward was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI for Atlanta, which improved to 5-3. Zack Wheeler allowed four runs in five innings for the loss. Juan Lagares knocked in two runs while Travis d'Arnaud had the other in a three-run ninth inning for New York, which slipped to 3-5.


Diamondbacks Down Giants

(San Francisco, CA) -- Paul Goldschmidt clubbed a three-run homer in the first inning as the Diamondbacks downed the Giants 7-3 in the middle of a three-game set at AT&T Park. Goldschmidt drove in four runs total, while Gerardo Parra went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs scored for Arizona, which has won two-of-three to improve to 3-8 on the year.  Bronson Arroyo pitched five innings of three-run ball for his first win. Josh Collmenter tossed the final four innings of scoreless ball for his first career save.  Michael Morse and Buster Posey both hit solo homers for the Giants, who fell to 6-and-3.  Tim Lincecum was rocked for seven runs in four frames as he fell to 0-1.


A's Outlast Twins In 11 Innings

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Derek Norris hit a three-run homer in the top of the 11th inning to propel the A's to a 7-4 win over the Twins at Target Field. Brandon Moss singled in two in a four-run first inning for Oakland, which has won the first two of the three-game series. Jim Johnson was charged with two runs in the ninth, but Dan Otero blew the save before getting credit for the eventual win. Jared Burton gave up the bomb to Norris in the 11th and took the loss for Minnesota. Jason Kubel went 4-for-5 with a home run and Brian Dozier also went deep for the Twins. Eduardo Escobar had two hits and an RBI in defeat.


Gordon Powers Royals Past Rays

(Kansas City, MO) -- Alex Gordon connected for his first homer of the season and drove in four as the Royals crunched the Rays 7-3 at Kauffman Stadium.  Billy Butler, Nori Aoki and Johnny Giavotella all drove in runs as the offense finally broke out. Jeremy Guthrie won his second game of the season with seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball. Rays starter Jake Odorizzi was knocked around for seven runs on 10 hits in five innings. Desmond Jennings went 2-for-4 with a homer and a double for Tampa Bay, which dropped two-of-three to KC.


Ortiz Rallies Red Sox Past Rangers

(Boston, MA) -- David Ortiz connected for a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally the Red Sox to a 4-2 win over the Rangers at Fenway Park. Alex Rios lofted a sac-fly in the top half to give Texas a 2-1 lead before "Big Papi" homered off Neal Cotts in the bottom half to put Boston in front for good. Jake Peavy struck out eight over six and two thirds innings of one-run ball in a no-decision. Andrew Miller got credit for the win and Koji Uehara his second save. Alexi Ogando took the loss for Texas. Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer for the Rangers, who lost two-of-three in the series.


Orioles Sink Yankees

(Bronx, NY) -- Jonathan Schoop lifted a three-run home run to help the Orioles win 5-4 against the Yankees in New York. Chris Davis had a sac-fly to score Schoop for the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth.  Brian Matusz picked up the win, and Tommy Hunter notched his third save for Baltimore, which improved to 4-5. Masahiro Tanaka allowed the three runs via homer and struck out 10 in seven innings, but Shawn Kelley took the loss. Carlos Beltran and Kelly Johnson both went deep for New York, which dropped to 4-5.


Blue Jays Beat Astros

(Toronto, Ontario) -- Brett Lawrie belted a two-run homer as the Blue Jays beat the Astros 7-3 at Rogers Centre. Maicer Izturis and Jose Bautista both plated a run and scored twice for the Jays, who are going for the three-game sweep in the finale.  Brandon Morrow struck out nine over six innings of thee-run ball as he evened his mark at 1-1. Alex Presley hit a two-run homer for Houston, which has lost six-of-seven since a 2-0 start. Lucas Harrell permitted five runs, four earned, in four-and-a-third frames as he fell to 0-2 with the loss.


Angels Top Mariners

(Seattle, WA) -- Garrett Richards dazzled the Mariners as the Angels held on for a 2-0 win at Safeco Field. Richards allowed one hit and walked three in seven scoreless innings for the win. Albert Pujols supplied the offense with a third-inning two-run homer. Los Angeles improved to 4-5. Ernesto Frieri locked up his first save. Roenis Elias gave up the blast over five innings for the loss in his second big league start. Abraham Almonte had the only hit for Seattle, which slipped to 5-3.


Tigers Top Dodgers In 10

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Victor Martinez hit the game-winning home run in the top of the 10th inning to send the Tigers past the Dodgers 7-6 in Los Angeles. Dee Gordon capped a three-run ninth inning with the game-tying RBI single for L.A. Nick Castellanos lifted his first career home run, a three-run shot in the third inning. Joe Nathan blew the save but improved to 2-0. Al Alburquerque picked up the save for Detroit, which improved to 5-2. Adrian Gonzalez belted a solo shot in the ninth for Los Angeles, which dropped to 6-4. Kenley Jansen took the loss.
