Mildred Matson, 75, of Newton, Illinois died Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16 at Crain Funeral Home, Newton with Pastor Phil Boyd officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, July 15 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery, Newton. Memorial gifts may be made to either the Hunt City Congregational Christian Church or to the Lincolnland Hospice. Mildred was born January 30, 1937 in Jasper County, the daughter of Eugene and Vivian M. (Gustin) Marshall. On December 23, 1956, Mildred married Leslie V. Matson. For 43 years, Mildred was associated with the Peoples State Bank in Newton. Through the years, she took part in the advancements in banking from learning to run the automated check sorter to performing her teller duties on the computer. Mildred was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was willing to try anything at the encouragement of her grandchildren. She was an active member of the Hunt City Congregational Christian Church and served as church pianist. She was the secretary for the Hunt City Township and member of the Home Extension. Mildred enjoyed bowling, tending her flowers, gardening and many birds at the family farm.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Leslie Matson of Newton; sons, Tim Matson of Greensboro, N.C. and Keith (wife Stacia) Matson of Newton; four grandchildren, Samantha, Christian, Ethan and Kayla Matson and aunt, Majorie Pinell of Tucson, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents; uncle, Wilfred Gustin and aunt, Sylvia Mineo.
