Dr. Thomas Spencer, 89, of Newton died at 10:24pm Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Monday, July 2, 2012 at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL with Rev. Louis Youngs officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, IL with full military rites by the Jasper Post #20 American Legion. Visitation will be held 2 hours before the service. Thomas was born on August 7, 1922 in Olney, IL the son of Frank and Anna Kay (Kasserman) Spencer. He married Virginia Stark on March 25, 1942 and she survives. Tom served his country in the United States Army during WWII. After the service Tom graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Tom returned to Newton and started his practice as a Doctor of Optometry. He served Newton and the surrounding area for many years before his retirement. Tom was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton; Jasper Post #20 American Legion; Newton Masonic Lodge #216 and the Elks. Tom had a love for golf. He was instrumental in starting the former Jasper County Country Club and was a charter member. He enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. Tom was very active in the community. He had served on the board of directors for the Peoples State Bank and Jasper Jobs, Inc. Tom was instrumental in bringing the former E.R. Moore Company to Newton. Tom was always giving back to the community that he served by supporting the Newton Sports programs.
Tom was named Jasper County Citizen of the Year for his many acts of kindness and support to the community.
Tom is survived by: Wife of 70 years – Virginia Spencer of Newton, IL...Son – Mark (Jennifer) Spencer of Mesquite, TX...Daughter – Marsha (Phil) Gearing of Dallas, TX...6 Grandsons and 1 Granddaughter and 9 Great Grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his step father Elmer Townsend.
