Barbara Joan Allred, 92, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away peacefully at 2:40 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, in her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home with Bishop Chris Hawk officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the SACF Memorial Sunken Garden Project or the Roxy Theatre both in Shelbyville.
Barb was born on March 14, 1933, in Bloomington, IL, the daughter of Paul McKay and Irma Katherine (Parsons) Scott. She graduated from high school in Detroit, MI and attended Illinois State University in Normal, IL, where she met her husband, Jay Ellis Allred. The two were married on May 22, 1954. They later moved to Shelbyville, IL where they lived in the same home for over 70 years, raising their four children there. Jay and Barb enjoyed traveling in and out of the country and spending time with their family. They were the epitome of love and family, embodying what it means to care for and support one another unconditionally. Barb wore many hats. She arranged flowers with her friend, Judi Borah, at the Floral Boutique in Shelbyville, for many years. She volunteered at Shelby Memorial Hospital and was a devoted and caring wife and mother. Barb also worked alongside her husband running Allred’s Floor Service in Shelbyville. She had a love for birds, scrapbooking, reading and gardening. Barb was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mattoon, IL and was active with the Greater Shelbyville Chamber of Commerce, where she was co-founder of Scarecrow Daze with her husband, Jay.
She is survived by her children, Beverly Woolverton (Rick) of Shelbyville, IL, Becky Smith (Bob) of Springville, UT, Bonnie Gerkin (Don) of Shelbyville, IL and James Allred (Stefanie) of Effingham, IL; 15 grandchildren; and 31 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jay Allred on October 19, 2020; siblings, Henry, Harold, Carol Ann and Dorothy; and infant grandson, Kit Matthew Woolverton.
