Donald Lee Watson, known affectionately as Don, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, at HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.
Born on September 17, 1944, in Chicago, the son of the late James D. and Minnie Marie (Wall) Watson, Don was a man of honor, dedication, and joy who lived a life that inspired all who knew him. After graduating from Cowden High School in 1962, he embarked on a distinguished 24-year career with the United States Air Force, serving his country with pride and distinction. Following his military service, Don worked as a commercial fisherman and at K Bowl in Effingham, where his friendly demeanor made him a well-known figure. On July 4, 1991, Don married Helena Norat, and together they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support for one another. Their union was a testament to their shared values and commitment to family.
Don is survived by his devoted wife, Helena of Cowden; his two sons, Randy Gleason of Cowden and John Gleason of Effingham; his loving sisters, Arlene Cosart of Effingham and Barb (Gary) Sarver of Cowden and many nieces and nephews.
Throughout his life, Don pursued his passions with enthusiasm. He was an avid bowler, a skill he honed and enjoyed at K Bowl. The great outdoors was his sanctuary, with deer hunting and fishing providing him not only with tranquility but also with stories to share with friends and family. Don also found joy in tending to his vegetable garden.
In keeping with Don's wishes, no services will be held. His family will honor his memory privately, reflecting on a life well-lived and the countless memories they shared. Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden is assisting the family. Rest in peace, Don. Your memory will be cherished, and your presence deeply missed.
