Mary Sue Mathews, 87, of Effingham, IL, formerly of New Baden, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Willowbrook Memory Support Residences in Effingham, IL.

Sue was born on November 25, 1937 in Odin, IL, the daughter of Albert and Ethel (Evans) Moore. She married Larry Mathews on May 17, 1968 in Belleville, IL, and he preceded her in death on December 19, 2024. Sue enjoyed taking care of others, this being a common Moore family trait. She was active in her church and volunteered at the food pantry in New Baden, IL. Sue treated others like a best friend. She would be there when needed, no matter who you were. Sue was fondly known by her family as a “food pimp”. She was always pushing food on those who came to visit and making sure no one left hungry or without leftovers of their own. Sharing a laugh with others was important to Sue. “Write that down, Jolly Rancher” is her famous line from the family telephone game. Time spent with family was cherished by Sue and her family.

Sue is survived by her children, R. Douglas and Natalie Mathews of Rome, GA, Lisa and Don Harris of Flora, IL, and Scott Anthony and Jan Mathews who reside in Ecuador; grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces, and nephews who she loved dearly; and brother-in-law, Jim and Nancy Mathews and family of Effingham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry; brother in infancy, Bobby; brother, Tommy Moore; and sisters, Marilyn Moore and Helen (Kenneth) Farthing.
