Michael J. Runde, known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home in Shelbyville, Illinois, on December 29, 2024, at the age of 74.
Born on June 18, 1950, in Teutopolis, Illinois, Mike was the oldest of eight children born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Kortte) Runde. He carried the spirit of his hometown throughout his life, embodying its values of hard work, community, and faith. Mike's life was one marked by dedication and love. On July 18, 1991, he married the love of his life, Darlene Patterson, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together, they built a family and a life filled with laughter and mutual respect.
Mike's legacy continues through his beloved wife, Darlene; his son, Matthew (Tara) Runde of Schaumburg; his daughter, Macheal (Lyle) Thomas of St. James, Missouri; his adored granddaughters, Willa Runde of Schaumburg and Kelcie (Bryce) Beccue of Effingham; his greatgrandson, Connelly Beccue; three sisters, Kathy Lundquist, Judy (Bill) Martin and Sue (Terry) Shannon, all of Teutopolis; three brothers, Jerry (Karen) Runde, Jeff (Tonya) Runde and Joe (Jeanette) Runde, also all of Teutopolis. His family remembers him as a cornerstone, someone who could always be relied upon for support and guidance.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Steve.
An alumnus of Teutopolis High School, Mike graduated in 1968 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science from St. Louis University. His education served as the foundation for a successful career, where he demonstrated his leadership skills and strong work ethic. Mike served as a manager at AKRA Builders in Teutopolis and later retired from RR Donnelley in Mattoon in 2011. Mike's faith was an integral part of his life. He was a devoted member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both in Teutopolis, where his contributions and fellowship were deeply valued. Beyond his professional and spiritual commitments, Mike had a passion for life's simpler pleasures. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and nothing brought him more joy than watching a game with friends and family. His love for baseball was matched by his affection for old western movies and his enjoyment of playing cards. A student of history, Mike had a particular interest in studying WWII and could often be found engrossed in books and documentaries on the subject. Traveling was another of his joys, especially visits to St. Louis. Mike's sense of humor was one of his most memorable traits. His quick wit and sarcastic quips were a source of amusement and affection for those who knew him. He had a talent for making people laugh, even in the most mundane moments, and his humor will be sorely missed by all.
