Pearl Devern "P.D." Simmons (84) of Mt. Vernon

Pearl Devern “P.D.” Simmons, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, at Stonebridge Memory Care in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
Born on January 29, 1940, in Bowling Green Township in Fayette County, the son of Charles and Fern“Irene” (Sarver) Simmons. On September 20, 1958, he married the love of his life, Kathryn “Joan” Nohren, in a union that would last a lifetime and become the bedrock for their loving family.
Together, they raised a family of strong values and deep connections, including their children Phillip (Cheryl) Simmons of Effingham, Karen (Rodney) Crouch of Highland, Lora (Landon) Sarver of Lebanon, and Jennifer Simmons of Claytonville, as well as their daughter-in-law, Dotty Simmons of Moweaqua. Pearl's legacy continued to flourish with his nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and five great-greatgrandchildren, each of whom brought him immeasurable joy. He is lovingly remembered by his brother, J.P. (Terry) Simmons of Altamont, and sister-in-law, Jane Simmons of Moccasin.
Pearl was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Michael and his brothers, Maynard and Haldon.
Pearl's dedication to family was mirrored by his commitment to his career. For 28 years, he was the respected assistant manager at Ging Elevator in Cowden, where his work ethic and leadership were evident to all who worked with him. He also took pride in his long-standing role selling seed for Pioneer, where his knowledge and passion for agriculture were highly regarded. Beyond his work, Pearl was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Cowden, where he served as an elder before becoming a member of the Herrick Church of Christ. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, and he generously gave his time and wisdom to his church community. Pearl's interests and hobbies painted the picture of a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest. In his early years, he enjoyed the competitive nature and camaraderie of playing fast-pitch softball. As he moved through the seasons of life, his love for quail hunting, playing cards, and family gatherings showcased his appreciation for the simple joys and the company of those he held dear.
Private family services will be held to honor and celebrate Pearl's life. Burial will take place in Mound Cemetery near Cowden. Memorials in Pearl’s honor may be made to the donor’s favorite charity and mailed to Lockart-Green Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Shelbyville, IL 62565.
