Mary Ann (Finfrock) Young (91) of Effingham

It is with extreme sadness and great relief that the family of Mary Ann (Finfrock) Young announce her passing on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at 7:35 a.m. She was 91 years old. Although she will be greatly missed, we are comforted by the assurance that she is now with her Lord and is no longer suffering.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Burial will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mary Ann was born on Monday, April 3, 1933 in rural Altamont, Illinois to Louis G. and Emma A. (Buchholz) Finfrock. She was third in a family of seven children. She attended McCoy School near her home and Altamont High School, graduating in 1951. She worked at the Altamont Variety Store for several years before her marriage. Later in life she worked for a time at K-Bowl in Effingham. Mary Ann and Gerald Young were married on June 30, 1957 in Dexter Methodist Church and enjoyed 67 years together. They made their home in rural Effingham on a farm near Dexter, Illinois. Mary Ann spent most of her years as a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her pies and homemade donuts. She spent many hours in her yard and vegetable garden and canned and preserved much of the produce. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and doing word search puzzles. Mary Ann had a lifelong love of music. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing. Mary Ann and Gerald enjoyed many evenings at the Altamont Opry and Edgewood Opry later in life. Mary Ann was a member of Dexter Methodist Church near her home for most of her life, attending Funkhouser Methodist Church in her later years.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Gerald A. Young, Effingham; sons, Steven A. (Marsha) Young, Effingham and Jerry D. (LaCletia) Young, Effingham; daughters, Diane E. (Paul) Davidson, Greenville and Linda Young, Altamont; grandsons, Bryan (Ashlee) Davidson, Greenville and Mitchell (Shelby) Young, Effingham; six step-grandchildren; great-granddaughters, Katelyn Davidson, Jade Davidson, and Amelia Young, and six step-great-grandchildren. Mary Ann is also survived by a sister, Allegra Ellis, Altamont; sister-in-law, Marsha Finfrock, Altamont, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Tyler Davidson; brothers, John (Marcia) Finfrock and Benson Finfrock; sisters Sarah (James) Warren, Luella (Harlan) Hooks, and Jane (Danny) Pugsley; and brother-in-law, David Ellis.
Memorials in honor of Mary Ann may be given to Sarah Bush Lincoln Willow Breeze Hospice House (800- 454-4055) or the donor’s choice. The family of Mary Ann Young would like to express their gratitude for all the cards, flowers, and many expressions of sympathy in the loss of our loved one. We wish to thank the nurses and caregivers of Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospice for the wonderful care given to Mary Ann in her last few months. We would like to extend special thanks to Cindy Blome, Kathy Clarkson, and Niola Jones, Mary Ann’s in-home caregivers. Your exceptional care for Mary Ann was a blessing.
