Wayne Whitaker (93) of Effingham

Wayne Whitaker, 93, of rural Neoga, Illinois, passed away at 10:05 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013, in the Aspen Creek Memory Support Residence of Effingham.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 22 at Grace United Methodist Church of Neoga, with Pastor Debbie Reese officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Friday, June 21, and one hour before services Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery near Neoga, with military services conducted by the Cumberland County Veterans Post 4598. Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home of Neoga, is in charge of arrangements. Wayne was born June 18, 1920, in Cumberland County, the son of U. Edgar and Lucretia (Gray) Whitaker. Wayne married Lucille Plummer November 26, 1942, in Paso Robles, California. Lucille, his wife of 68 years, passed away September 27, 2010. Wayne served in the United States Army during World War II and was a retired farmer.
Mr. Whitaker leaves one son, Rev. Jim (wife Rhonda) Whitaker of Neoga; five daughters, Sheryl (husband Victor) Brandenburg and of rural Neoga, Carol (husband David) Haskett of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Cathy (husband Don) Pankey of Neoga, Cindy (husband Bret) Mendenhall of Greensboro, Ga., and Dana (husband Rick) Homann of Charleston; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Mr. Whitaker was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lucille Whitaker; two brothers, George and Loren Whitaker and one granddaughter, Brittany Mendenhall.
